Gordon Burns (born 10 June 1942 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a British journalist and television presenter who hosted Granada TV's popular game show The Krypton Factor for its original 18 year run (1977 - 1995). Since 1997, he has been the anchorman for the BBC regional news programme North West Tonight, which he currently co-hosts with Ranvir Singh.[1]
Biography
Gordon Burns lived in Lisburn in Northern Ireland up to the age of five, and returned from London,[2] where his father had worked as the editor of Hansard. He was educated at Dulwich College, a boys' independent school in South London, then at 13, attended Campbell College, a grammar school in Belfast,. He worked at the Belfast Telegraph and presented the local news on Ulster Television.
Career
Burns' status as a national celebrity began with his association of ITV's popular game show The Krypton Factor which he presented for eighteen years from 1977 to 1995.[2]
He was the presenter of Password for Ulster Television, one of their few programmes shown throughout the ITV network. He also hosted a segment in some series of LWT's Surprise, Surprise.
Since 1997, most weekdays Burns has presented North West Tonight, its shorter lunchtime equivalent, North West Today, and also the 3 minute mid-afternoon bulletin. He is also the voice of "The Chain" feature on the Radcliffe and Maconie show on BBC Radio 2.
Sport
He is known to be a Liverpool Football Club season ticket holder,[3] but makes positive comments about all North West football teams while presenting North West Tonight. Burns also enjoys watching Lancashire County Cricket Club.[4]
