DaMarques Johnson (born June 28, 1982 in Salt Lake City, Utah) is a American professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. He is a competitor on The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom.

Biography

Johnson was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, he and his family were poor and lived in a bad part of the town.[1] Johnson was raised mostly by his mother because of his father dying when he nine years old.[1] Johnson attended and graduated from Kearns High School. In 2001, Johnson joined the United States Army and National Guard, an option given to him as a kid to get out of some trouble.[1] At one point while enlisted, Johnson had the job of monitoring the illegal drug trade in Columbia and South America.[2][3]

Before taping for the Ultimate Fighter, DaMarques taught children's jiu-jitsu classes at Sandy's Elite Performance gym.[4]

Mixed Martial Arts

Early career

While stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina for the Army, Johnson began training jiu jitsu just for fun and to stay active.[3] He would spar with other soldiers and would easily defeat them in a quick and spectacular fashion. While serving eight years of active duty, Johnson continued to train in jiu-jitsu. Johnson began competing in grappling tournaments because he was not allowed to have fights while stationed.[3] After returning home, Johnson met UFC veteran Jeremy Horn in a bar. Johnson asked for autograph, instead Horn drew out a map to his gym.[3] Johnson then began training mixed martial arts full time with Horn.[2] Johnson had his first fight in 2005, losing by technical knockout. Johnson had his first win at a King of the Cage event, winning the fight by submission due to punches.[5]

The Ultimate Fighter

Johnson appears on The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom. He defeated Ray Elbe by technical knockout in an elimination match earning him a spot on the United States team. Johnson won his second fight against Dean Amasinger by submission using a triangle choke, which is noted by his coaches and teammates to be his signature submission move. Johnson won his semi-final matchip against Nick Osipczak by unanimous decision. This win earned him the first spot in the welterweight finals.[6]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

DaMarques is set to fight on June 20, at the The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada. Johnson will fight James Wilks to crown the TUF 9 welterweight champion.

Personal life

DaMarques has a four year old son, Maxton.[1]
