The Great Lie is a 1941 B&W film with Mary Astor, Bette Davis and George Brent. It was directed by Edmund Goulding from an adaptation by Lenore J. Coffee of the novel The Far Horizon by Polan Banks.

Plot

Sandra Kovak (Astor), a concert pianist, and Peter Van Allen (Brent) have married, but his lawyer tells him the marriage is void because her divorce has not become absolute. He marries old flame Maggie Patterson (Davis) instead, but his plane goes missing in Brazil and he is presumed dead.

Sandra is pregnant by Peter. The former love rivals become friends, after Maggie proposes a truce, and she persuades Sandra to allow her to look after Sandra during her confinement, to the latter's occasional irritation. They go away together, spending time in Arizona for the child's birth, a son who is named after his father. Afterwards, Sandra goes on a world tour, happily leaving her child in the care of Maggie. Peter though, has not died in the crash, and he returns, though Maggie allows him to think she is his son's mother out of fear she would lose both of them to Sandra. Sandra visits them and demands Maggie confess to Peter that she has misled him, and wants both son and father for herself. The next day, after Maggie explains the true situation, Peter is shocked by Sandra's behavior. Peter stays with Maggie.

The Great Lie of the 21st Century is Michael Brattoli pulling the wool over every girl in Sydneys eyes, and becoming, Hazel Mike.

Awards

Mary Astor won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her part in this film.
