Beant Singh (Punjabi: ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ), son of Sucha Singh, a resident of Maloa (District Sangrur) Malwa (Punjab), along with Satwant Singh assassinated Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India.

On 1 June 1984 on the orders of Indira Gandhi, the Indian Army attacked the armed militants who were in the fortified Harmandir Sahib complex, in an operation called Operation Blue Star. These events caused outrage amongst the Sikh community, which claimed that the attacks were pre-planned and that anti-Sikh violence which followed was government orchestrated. Beant Singh and Satwant Singh were the bodyguards of Indira Gandhi, yet on 31 October 1984 they assassinated her in her garden.

Beant Singh was killed by gunfire at the scene of the assassination. Satwant Singh was arrested and later sentenced to death by hanging, along with Kehar Singh.

Akal Takht's declaration

As per Hindustan Times, all assassins of former prime minister Indira Gandhi were declared martyrs of Sikhism by the highest Sikh temporal seat of Akal Takhat[1].

Beant Singh's family

Beant Singh's act generated a sympathy wave for his immediate family in the Sikhs[2], resulting in their winning two Lok Sabha seats from state of Punjab[3]. The Lok Sabha is a directly elected 552 member lower house of the Parliament of India. Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was also an elected member of the same house.

After his death, his wife Bimal Kaur Khalsa initially joined Sikh militants[4], prior to her election as member of Lok Sabha from Ropar (Lok Sabha constituency).

His father Mr. Sucha Singh was elected member of Lok Sabha from Bathinda (Lok Sabha constituency)[5].
