Greater Noida (GN) (Hindi: नोएडा (Nōēḍā), Urdu: نویڈا /Noyḋā/) is a sub-city of Delhi lying south-east to it. Situated in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Greater Noida falls within the National Capital Region of India and is adjacent to NOIDA, one of the largest industrial townships in Asia.

Economy

Greater Noida is home to a number of Indian and foreign multi-national companies. There are a number of private educational institutions as well, so it is also known as the Educational Park. A number of sights are planned to be constructed in Greater Noida, including a Greater Noida Night Safari. It is also proposed that Greater Noida will host India's first Formula one circuit Indian Grand Prix. An 18 hole golf course called the Jaypee Greens, designed by Greg Norman is present in Greater Noida. An International Airport is also being planned near Jewar village of Greater Noida. Gautam Budh university has already been inaugurated. Greater Noida is gearing up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

History

In the early 1980s the Government of India realized that the rapid rate at which Delhi was expanding would result in chaos. So they planned to develop residential and industrial areas around the capital to reduce the burden of rapid development on the capital. The two areas which were developed were Gurgaon (bordering Haryana) and Noida (bordering Uttar Pradesh). Since they were planned with a goal in mind, Noida's infrastructure and utilities were carefully laid out. The 90s saw a huge growth in the economy of India, and many people migrated to the cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Noida was developed to be able to accommodate population growth for 20-25 years. But, with the massive influx to Delhi, it was overloaded in just 15 years. The Governmentt of UP at that point came up with the idea of creating Greater Noida, an extension of Noida, but with better and stricter planning. The idea was to create a world class city. The city was planned to be situated approximately 25 km from Noida and had plans of having its own Railway Junction and international airport. It was intended that Greater Noida would not depend on Delhi and other areas for anything. Initially, the city developed extremely quickly but due to the political instability in the state, the development slowed down appreciably.

Greater Noida is a carefully planned township. Roads are wide and service lane for every major road. The sectors are named after the letters of the Greek alphabet (e.g. Alpha, Beta, Gamma). All of the cabling is run underground. It is currently planned to be connected to Delhi through Delhi's metro system by 2016.

Recently there has been development in terms of Shopping Malls and Retail Stores. Major retail stores such as TATA Croma, More Retail, Reliance Fresh, Reliance Footprints have set up business in Greater Noida.
