Taringa! is a virtual community from Argentina created in 2004 by Fernando Saez and Lucas Godón and acquired in November 2006 by Alberto Nakayama and the Botbol brothers (Matías and Hernán). In Taringa!, users can share all kinds of topics through posts. This site is a Web 2.0 website. Taringa! is also famous because many of its users currently upload links concerning copyrighted material, such as music, comics, books or movies, without permission. Because of that, most of the material included in this website is illegal. Another controversial issue concerns to the fact that many users post information from another websites, without mentioning sources or references.

Taringa! does not allow the publication of explicit material as a new site was created of similar appearance called Poringa!, in which users can publish this sort of content. While Poringa! is a completely separate site, its users and moderators are the same as in Taringa!

The fame of both sites has grown largely thanks to appearance in national media for various reasons, to name: the meeting of a boy with his father, after 25 years in less than 24 hours, or the video source intimate Wanda Nara, a famous argentinian model, whose post had more than 2 million hits and had an impact on television and magazines for several months. The other important reason is (as described above) the increasing quantity of illegal content uploaded by its users.

The Taringa! main site has been unreachable since June-July of 2009, this is probably due to legal issues.

System Users

All User's (with the exception of freshmen) have a certain amount of points with which to evaluate collaborations (posts) outside. Each time a user votes a post, the author sees increased its scoring staff, which over time allows you to climb in the range of users.

  • Moderator: a moderator is responsible for maintaining order, peace and respect in Taringa!, Paying attention to protocol. There are 35 items per day.
  • Great User: is a prize for those who deserve it, there was no specific criteria for the award and the only difference with New Full Users or is Full Users who have 17 points a day.
  • Full User: the same privileges as New Full Users. It's called Full Users those who were registered before release of Taringa 3! (March 2007). Every day can give 12 points.
  • New Full User: after obtaining 50 points in a single post the freshmen become New Full Users and can make full use of Taringa!, Including comments and post in the general section. They have 10 points per day to qualify for other post.
  • Newbie: Users are newcomers to the community. Its activity is restricted to post and comment under section freshmen, but their access to the site's content is complete. They can not give points.

Name

Reportedly the name of Taringa! came from a zoo, an ape made a noise like "Tah-Inga", it sounded funny and striking so was decided to put that name.[citation needed]

There is a suburb in Queensland, Australia called Taringa. In aboriginal language, Taringa means "tarau" (stones) and "nga" (made out of).
