"Beat Again" is the first single by British band JLS, taken from their debut album, JLS. The song's first release came in the form of digital download on the UK/Irish iTunes Store.[1]

Release, background and writing inspiration

JLS band member Aston Merrygold commented on the single's background:

"I think people were expecting a cover as our first single. But this is our own individual sound. When we heard Beat Again we loved it."[2]

Reception

Critical

To date, "Beat Again" has garnered mixed to successful reviews. Giving the single three stars, Digital Spy noted that JLS "have at least broken with X Factor convention on their debut single". The review also drew positive comparisons to work by American R&B artist Ne-Yo. However, the reviewer went on to say the single is "cheesier than a Jennifer Aniston rom-com".[3] Another review, giving the single three stars out of five, said "Beat Again" "seems to lack originality".[4] It was included on the Popjustice song of the day.[5] The Daily Record wrote that the single had "the R&B electro sass of Justin Timberlake or Rihanna [and] will surprise many".[2]

Commercial and chart performance

The song made its chart debut on the Billboard Euro Digital Tracks chart at number 13,[6] and on the Euro Digital Songs at number 19.[7] The song debuted on the Irish Singles Chart at number four.[8] The song was especially successful on the UK Singles Chart, debuting at number-one,[9] selling 106,000 copies, meaning the single was the second fastest-selling single of 2009 in the UK.[10] It has so far sold 196,700 copies in the UK.

The music video shows various scenes of JLS dancing to the song in front of various coloured lights. The dance choreography involves moves revolving around heartbeats, alluding to the title "Beat Again".[11]
