Tekken 6 (鉄拳6) is the latest installment of Namco's Tekken series, which was released in Japanese arcades on November 26, 2007. It will be released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PlayStation Portable on October 27, 2009 in North America and on October 30, 2009 in Europe. It is the first game to be released on the PlayStation 3-based System 357 arcade board.[3] At the 2008 Tokyo Game Show, it was announced the console version of Tekken 6 will include the new stages and characters of Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, while the PlayStation Portable version will feature additional content to its console couterparts.[4]
Gameplay
Katsuhiro Harada, director of Tekken 6, has stated the game will retain all of the gameplay elements from Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection that were well-received by fans. He also said that the stages will be bigger and will have more interactivity,[5] such as walls or floors that can be broken to reveal new fighting areas.[6] The character customization feature will also be more involved with game play.[5]
In addition, the game adds a new "rage" system, which gives characters more power when their vitality is low. When activated, a red energy field surrounds the character and their health bar starts to flicker red.[7] Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will include an online versus multiplayer mode over PSN and Xbox Live respectively.[8]
The home versions will also have an extra 'Scenario Campaign' mode that continues the play style of Tekken 3 and Tekken 4's 'Tekken Force' modes and Tekken 5's 'Devil Within' mode. This mode can be played co-operatively with two players, and also allows the players to pick up weapons such as poles and gatling guns. Other features in the home versions include a toggle option for motion blur.[9]
Another game play feature added is the bound system. If certain conditions are met, such as slamming the opponent strongly to the ground or falling in a multi-tiered stage, the opponent will bounce back from the ground, allowing bigger combos and new techniques.
Plot
Following his victory in the previous tournament, Jin Kazama has taken charge of the Mishima Zaibatsu and now possesses tyrannical ambitions. Using his resources within the organization to become a global superpower, he severs the Mishima Zaibatsu's national ties and openly declares war on several nations. This action plunges the world into a chaotic spiral, with war erupting around the globe and even amidst the space colonies orbiting the planet. His biological father, Kazuya Mishima, is aware of this and finds Jin's interference in his own plans for global domination to be a nuisance. Now in charge of G Corporation (which was put under his command following a violent fury against the company's heads), Kazuya is seen as the only force who could oppose Jin and places a bounty on Jin's head for anyone who can capture him. Jin's response is to announce The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 in order to battle Kazuya and crush G Corporation.
Characters
Tekken developer and Executive Producer of Tekken 6 Katsuhiro Harada said, "The number of playable characters will be bigger than Tekken 5 and be the largest roster in the series. I've been on the Tekken series for over 10 years, and one thing we have particularly focused on after Tekken 3 is making sure each character is unique and doesn't overlap with other characters. They all are unique not only in their appearance but their personality and techniques as well."[10]
Harada has stated that Tekken 6 will boast the greatest number of characters ever seen in a Tekken game with a total of 42 characters, including virtually all of the characters from Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and the two new Bloodline Rebellion characters. According to an Update article in the PlayStation Gallery section on page 40 of the May 2009 issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine players are able to customize the characters and take any non-customized or customized character online.
Eight new characters have been confirmed (Two are non-playable boss characters). The first character, Zafina, is a female who will have moves Harada likened to that of a "spider" and who enters the tournament to prevent the clash of the "two evil stars".[5] The second character, Leo, is a German fighter who is intended to be a character which can be played by beginners and experienced players alike. The death of his mother, presumably at the hands of Kazuya Mishima prompts him to begin investigating the Mishima Zaibatsu.[5] The third character, Miguel Caballero Rojo, is a Spaniard Matador with a passion for fighting, but no real discipline. Miguel wants to exact revenge upon the death of his sister at her wedding. The fourth character, Bob, is an American who was known as a martial arts genius. Due to being unable to defeat larger opponents however, he disappeared from the fighting world, determined to increase his weight and power while still maintaining speed. Bob enters The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 to test his new skills and new size. The fifth character, NANCY-MI647J, is the bonus boss of the game. NANCY is a giant robotic creation of Mishima Zaibatsu similar as the Jack robots. The sixth character, Azazel, is the final boss of the game. Azazel's story is said to be related with Zafina and Julia Chang's story in Tekken 6 and the confrontation between Jin Kazama and his father Kazuya Mishima (presumably the 'two evil stars' from Zafina's story). In the console version from Bloodline Rebellion, the seventh character is Alisa Boskonovitch, a cyborg with jet wings and spinning limbs who may be the cybernetically-enhanced daughter of Doctor Boskonovitch, and can also use her own head as a weapon, and the eighth character is Lars Alexandersson, an unknown descendant of Heihachi Mishima, presumably an illegitimate son. [11].
The tournament host this time is Jin Kazama and the game's storyline follows his ending from Tekken 5 (ascension to the leadership of the Mishima Zaibatsu through victory in the previous tournament). Jin now has tyrannical ambitions, using his resources within the organization to become a global superpower. He severs the Mishima Zaibatsu's national ties and openly declares war on several nations, plunging the world into a chaotic spiral. Kazuya is aware of this and finds Jin's interference in his own plans for global domination to be a nuisance. Now in charge of G Corporation (which was put under his command following a violent attack against the company's heads who betrayed and tried to kill him), Kazuya is seen as the only force who could oppose Jin and places a bounty on Jin's head for anyone who can capture him. Jin's response is to announce The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 in order to battle Kazuya and crush G Corporation.
