Love Aaj Kal (Hindi: लव आज कल, English translation: Love Now & Then, not to be confused with "Love Today & Yesterday or "Love these days") is a Bollywood film starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles[2] with Rahul Khanna, Rishi Kapoor and Giselle Monteiro in supporting roles.[3] The film is directed by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Saif Ali Khan and Dinesh Vijan. The film portrays the feeling of pure love which never changes over time (Love "now" and "then"), although the perspective of realizing one's soulmate has changed over time.

Cast

Production

The shooting of the film started on May 2008[4] and took place in Red Fort, Purana Qila and on the streets of Delhi. Parts have been shot in London, San Francisco and Kolkata .[5] The film wasn't given a name until January 2009, after shooting was complete.[6]

Release

Marketing

The producers of the film inked marketing tie-ups with ICC T20 World Cup, Shoppers Stop and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance.[7] The apparel worn by the lead cast is exclusively available at Shoppers Stop. With Bajaj Allianz they have a tie up to share the special moments where they could win a chance to meet Saif Ali Khan, the protagonist and the producer of the movie. The tie up with ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2009 was that both Deepika and Saif will be in England before the tournament begins, with Saif expected to commentate on matches for Indian television. [8]

Reception

Critical Reception

Box Office

Love Aaj Kal proved to be a smash hit grossing over Rs. 62 crores in India and abroad.Of this Rs. 62 crores, 47 crores were from the Indian market and the rest from the worldwide release including the United Kingdom, Pakistan and Australia.[9] Love Aaj Kal released across 1800 plus screens worldwide on 31st July 2009 with one of the highest number of daily shows across multiplexes. Love Aaj Kal has done exceedingly well in multiplex cinemas as compared to single screens whereas in the case of Kambakkht Ishq it was the single screens that brought in more audiences after the initial opening. The film did steady business in it's first week run, has been declared a super hit and has the highest gross so far for this year.[10]

Music

Untitled

The music of Love Aaj Kal is composed by Pritam with lyrics provided by Irshad Kamil. Soon after the release, Pritam was beset by the controversy over one of the songs (and its remixed version) that is purportedly a copy of a Punjabi folk song sung by a famous Pakistani singer. Despite the controversy, the music of the film has generally received good reviews.

The album is a new age album. Delving into the past to come up with a retro feel but at the same time sounding very modern and very today.[13]
