The surnames MacLeod, McLeod are Anglicisations of the Gaelic patronymic name Mac Leòid meaning "son of Leòd". This Gaelic name (Leòd) is a form of the Old Norse personal name Ljótr which means "ugly".[1] According to George Fraser Black, the earliest record of the surname is of Gillandres MacLeod, in 1227.[2] The name is Template:Pron-en.
