"Day 'n' Nite"
Song

"Day 'n' Nite" (listed as "Day 'n' Nite (Nightmare)" on the tracklist of Man on the Moon: The End of Day) is the debut single by alternative hip hop artist Kid Cudi. It was produced by Dot Da Genius and released February 2008 on the A Kid Named Cudi mixtape, but was leaked in December 2007 and was featured by many blogs in mid-November 2008. It is also the first official single from his first official album Man on the Moon: The End of Day. The song has so far sold over 1,993,000 digital downloads in the United States.[1]

Release

The single was released February 5, 2008, as a digital download via iTunes. It was released prior to Kid Cudi's signing to the GOOD Music label.

There are currently eleven remixes made for the song, one by Pitbull, another by Jim Jones, a third house remix by Crookers, a fourth by Collie Buddz, a fifth by Twin Cities unsigned artist Young Son, a sixth by Jermaine Dupri a seventh by Trey Songz, an eighth by Styles P, and a ninth remix by K'naan titled "Dayless Night".

In Europe, the remix by the Italian DJ duo Crookers, is much more popular than the original. For example, it was song of the week on Belgian radio station Studio Brussel.[2] A video was released for this version of the song that Cudi expressed displeasure with and it was released without his permission. He issued an explanation on his blog and asked that all bloggers remove the video from their blogs.[3] The song's released on 12 January in UK as both download and physical. The Crookers remix debuted at number 2 in the UK singles chart, being beaten off the top spot by Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" having retained its position for 3 weeks. The Crookers remix is often played during his concerts, as a continuation of the original version. The remix won an award at the Beatport Music Awards of 2009 for 2007 tracks under the category Best Indie Dance / Nu Disco track of 2007.[4]

There have also been three mashups made with the song by The Hood Internet. These are done with Cornelius (Another Day 'n' Nite), Bon Jovi (Prayer 'n' Nite}, and Sunn O))) (Day 'n' Aghartha).[5]

The original version has currently peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., and in Canada it reached #15 on the Canadian Hot 100.

Music video

There were two music videos made for Day 'n' Nite. The first being a pop art style video. It was directed by the French director So-Me who previously worked on music videos with a similar pop art style such as Justice's "D.A.N.C.E." and Kanye West's "Good Life". The pop art music video was produced by Imetrages and also features a brief appearance by Travis Barker. It features Cudi walking around his town doing various activities such as getting a pizza, grocery shopping, buying a tux, etc; and several things he sees turn into art. The art represents things that they are similar to (for example, the pizzeria workers become DJs spinning discs instead of pizzas), or perhaps things that Cudi (or the song's narrator) wishes they were. The second version was made specifically for The Crookers remix of the song. It showcases Cudi as an employee at a typical British corner shop called "Day 'n' Nite", seen with several girls dancing then caressing him. British R&B singer Alesha Dixon featured in the video, which was recorded in East Dulwich, UK, a London suburb. A minor joke in the beginning is the manager character mispronouncing the name Buddy (Cudi's character). This may be a reference to pronounciation confusion regarding the name "Cudi".

Use in media

It is featured on the video games, Midnight Club: Los Angeles and NBA Live 2009, and the 64th episode of the HBO series, Entourage, both during the fall season. In the spring of 2009, the Crookers version was featured prominently in an Axe commercial.[1] The song also appears on the The CW's The Game on Season 3 episode "Put a Ring on It".

"Day 'n' Nite" was partially featured on the Inside the White House Special on June 2, 2009.

Enter Shikari did a cover version on BBC Radio One's Live Lounge on June 11, 2009.
