Romeo Johnson

Romeo Johnson is an American singer, songwriter, composer, and vocal coach. A Chattanooga, TN native, Romeo attended Brainerd High School, for Music Theory, Conducting/Arranging, and Stage Band. He later attended The University of TN, and studied Theater, Voice, and Dance. Romeo is a baritone and has a vocal range from falsetto to bass, and a five-octave vocal range. His range allows him to sing as high as the sopranos and as low as the basses. Johnson makes his home in Los Angeles where he teaches vocal lessons to not only Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, but also Teddy Riley, Blackstreet, Paradiso Girls, Ester Dean, Cassandra Ventura "Cassie", Rashé of Nikki 16 and many other students.

Romeo's impressive resume, and 20+ years experience labels him as a voice you’ve heard with the best in the business by his colleagues.

Romeo's Music Career

Romeo first arrived on the Los Angeles music scene [when?] making a name for himself by singing at various open mic venues and playing bass guitar for Ali Woodson (former lead vocalist of the Temptations). Later, Romeo began his touring career with Vesta Williams as a background vocalist and dancer. She is known for her full four-octave voice range.Johnson has played Bass Guitar and Bass Synthesizer for singer Jody Watley. He continued working by playing Bass Guitar and singing two duets with Sheena Easton, which boosted Johnson's popularity.

In between touring Romeo works as a session vocalist on sound recordings with such greats like, Kanye West "808’s & Heartbreak", Ice Cube "Raw Footage, Snoop Dogg “Ego Trippin”, Stevie Wonder “A Time 2 Love”, Smashmouth, Nate Dogg, Xzibit “Man vs. Machine”, Mack 10 “Bang Or Ball”, George Howard “Attitude Adjustment”, James Ingram “It's Real”, Jennifer Holliday “I'm On Your Side”.[1]

In 2002 Romeo worked with rap artist Xzibit on his "Symphony In X Major".

Currently, Romeo Johnson can be seen in two reality TV shows on MTV as the Vocal Director and Personal Vocal Coach for Sean "P. Diddy" Combs in “Making His Band” and the Vocal Coach and background section leader on P. Diddy’s “StarMaker”. In 2009 P. Diddy was quoted stating, "Romeo has vocally coached everybody, he is vocally coaching me now". Johnson has worked with numerous producers including Stevie Wonder, Patrice Rushen, Nile Rogers, R. Kelly, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Michael J. Powell, George Howard, DJ Quik and Slam to name a few.

Romeo Johnson has been on movie soundtracks such as “The Cookout” soundtrack as Lead Vocals on “The Closer I Get To You” and the “Radio” movie soundtrack as background vocals for India Arie. Romeo's impressive career also includes live TV performances, numerous award shows and commercial radio jingles which include Los Angeles’ HOT 92 JAMZ. His voice is featured on a national commercial jingle airing for “Outlast” a CoverGirl Product featuring Queen Latifah. Romeo also worked with Macy Gray on the song “Time of My Life” featured on the "8 Mile" movie soundtrack, and the "Holla" movie soundtrack having written and produced two songs.[1]

In 1993 Janet Jackson selected Romeo as her first ever Male vocalist on the “janet” Tour, and on that tour Romeo was appointed background section leader. Romeo has also toured with vocal greats such as Millie Jackson, Rahsaan Patterson, Rufus, Teddy Riley & GUY, Blackstreet, Patti Austin, Queen Latifah, and the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson. More recently, Johnson traveled to Japan as a Vocalist & B.G. Section Leader on the Teddy Riley & GUY Billboard Live in Japan Reunion Tour 2009.
