Matthew Frederick Riddle (born January 14, 1986) is an American professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. He was a cast member of SpikeTV's The Ultimate Fighter 7. He currently fights for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in their welterweight division.

Biography

Riddle was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and later moved to Saratoga Springs, New York. He attended the local high school, Saratoga Springs High. He graduated from high school in 2004 and then attended East Stroudsburg University.

Mixed Martial Arts

Riddle's main experience comes from High School wrestling. He wrestled at Saratoga High school in upstate New York.[3] There Riddle was a National wrestling Champion and in his Senior year was a NY State wrestling Champion.[1] He is 1-0 in amateur MMA.[1]

Riddle worked as a roofer and would then train jujitsu in the evenings.[4] Since Riddle had little to no money he did not train at a gym but Riddle trained in his flat. Riddle used BJ Penn's book, Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge to help him learn.[4] Riddle is currently a purple belt in Jujitsu.[1]

The Ultimate Fighter

Matt Riddle fought Dan Simmler an understudy of Matt Serra. Riddle knocked out Simmler in the opening of the second round and struck him three times in the jaw after he had lost consciousness,[5] breaking Simmler's jaw in two places.[5] It was called the biggest knock out in The Ultimate Fighter history by Dana White and the knock out of the century by Quinton Jackson.[5] Riddle was picked second for team Rampage.[6]

After a few weeks into training, Rampage notices that Riddle is always smiling so Rampage starts calling him Chipper.[7] In the fourth episode of the show Riddle started to trash talk Dante Rivera a competitor for Team Forest. Dante started telling Riddle that he was going to request to Forest Griffin the fight of Riddle vs. Rivera. Dante then told Riddle that he wouldn't even make it past the first round, and he would bet the sum of 500 dollars. On the day to pick the fight Team Forest made the decision to put Riddle up against Tim Credeur instead of Dante. Credeur defeated Matt Riddle by an armbar in the third round, knocking Riddle out of the tournament.[8] After the fight Credeur bought Riddle an Xbox 360 with his earnings.[9]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

At the TUF 7 Finale, Riddle defeated former cast mate Dante Rivera in their UFC debuts.[10] The judges scored the fight (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).[11]

Riddle was then scheduled to fight Ryan Thomas at UFC 91, but a knee injury has forced Riddle out of the fight. Recovery for the knee injury was scheduled to take 6–8 weeks.[12] After recovering, Riddle fought and defeated Steve Bruno at UFC Fight Night: Lauzon vs. Stephens, Riddle won by unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). [13]

In his third UFC bout, Riddle defeated another one of his former Ultimate Fighter 7 cast mates, Dan Cramer at UFC 101 on the undercard. The judges scored the bout 29-27, 30-26 and 30-27.[14][15]

He is expected to face TUF 9 alumni, Nick Osipczak on November 14, 2009 at UFC 105. The fight will be held in Osipczak's home country of England.[16]
