Polly Carey Draper (born June 15, 1956) is an American actress, screenwriter, playwright, producer and director. She first became known for her role on ABC's Thirtysomething. In 1998, Draper made her screenwriting debut for the film The Tic Code, which was inspired by her husband's life, and co-starred Gregory Hines. In early 2007, Draper created, executive produced, wrote, and directed the television series The Naked Brothers Band on Nickelodeon, a mock documentary starring her sons, Nat and Alex Wolff.
Personal life
Draper was born in Gary, Indiana to Phyllis, a Peace Corps administrator, and William Henry Draper III, venture capitalist and civic leader of the United Nations Development Programme.[1] Her brother is venture capitalist Tim Draper[2] and her niece is actress Jesse Draper.[3] In 1989, Draper appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show, where she met jazz pianist and composer Michael Wolff where he served as the band-leader. They married, and have two children—Nat and Alex.
Career
In 1977, Draper received her B.A.A. from Yale University and in 1980, her M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama. Draper starred as Ellyn Warren on ABC's drama Thirtysomething. Draper's screenwriting debut was in Gary Winick's The Tic Code which is about Tourette syndrome—a condition her husband, Michael Wolff has; Wolff contributed film's score. Draper also served as creator, head writer, executive producer, and director of Nickelodeon's The Naked Brothers Band, a rock-mockumentary, starring her sons, Nat and Alex Wolff. The series was adapted for the independent film The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie, which Draper wrote and directed. Draper does not appear in the film (except with the Thirtysomething cast in one of the scenes) or the TV series; the characters' mother is mentioned as deceased.
Awards and nominations
Draper's role on ABC's thirtysomething earned her a best supporting actress nomination at the 1988 Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In 1998, Draper won the Bronze Gryphon award for Best Actress at the Giffoni Film Festival. In 2005, Draper won the Audience Award for Family Feature Film at the Hamptons International Film Festival for her film The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie.
In 2007, Draper was nominated at the Writers Guild Award for The Naked Brothers Band episode Nat is A Stand-Up Guy in the category for Children's Episodic Shows & Specials. In 2009, won the Writers Guild Award for The Naked Brothers Band made-for-TV-movie Polar Bears in the category of Children's Script: Long Form or Special.
