Ingeborg Haug Steinholt (born June 16, 1986, in Sandnessjøen) is a Norwegian politician for the party Red and since 2007 a member of Nordland County Council. She bas been a central board member in Red Youth (RU) since 2006, with her term expiring in 2010, she is also a member of the county board of directors in Red Youth, with her expiring in 2010.[2]

Steinholt was born in Sandnessjøen and is presently studying nursing in Oslo, and is a part-time nurse assistant. She started her political career in the Red Youth, serving several high-ranking position after becoming County Council representative in 2007. Standing for a more liberal policy when regarding vocational education, she wants to remove much uneeded theory in such subjects.

Life and career

Steinholt was born on June 16, 1986, in Sandnessjøen. She later moved to Oslo to study nursing, as well as working as an assistant nurse. She retains a residence both in Oslo and Sandnessjøen.[2]

She started her political career as a member of Red Youth, she later became a member of the socialist party Red. In 2007, she was elected as first candidate as part of the local elections of 2007.[2] Before election day, she went on a short-lived campaign which mostly included stops in public schools to debate.[3] During the campaign, she focused on environmental issues, including opposition to the proposed petroleum industry in Northern Norway.[4] The party was able to gather 2,956 (3.0%) of the popular vote, an increase of 0.9% from previous local election in 2003. As a result of the election, Steinholt earned a second seat for Red[5] and became the youngest member in the Nordland County Council.[6] One of her campaign promises was to stop petroleum activities outside Lofoten and Vesterålen because of its potentially hazardous effects on the area. When asked if she had any political allies in parliament who could help her, she replied: "our most important partners are not in Parliament [but instead] those organizations that are working around Norway to make things better for people. We must ensure that Public Action For an Oil-Free Lofoten and Vesterålen will be heard".[2]

In November 2009, Altadhaug Municipality passed a budget cut of about NOK 400,000 to youth work. Believing that the government should give more funding to the municipalities, Steinholt said that "the proposed budget cuts in Alstahaug are completely off the wall". She stated further that if they wages of the chief of administration and mayor had been cut to the mean wage amongst the population, the municipality could have saved NOK 487,000.[7] In the 2009 parliamentary election, Steinholt received 1,829 votes as top candidate for Red in Nordland.[8]

She was elected into the Central Board of Red Youth in 2006,[9] with her term expiring in 2010. Two years later, she earned a seat on the national board, with her term expiring in 2010.[2]

Political beliefs

Steinholt has stated that she feels the government should reduce unnecessary theory in the vocational education program at upper secondary school, claiming it to be one of the reasons of the rising dropout levels in Norwegian schools. She also feels that the Norwegian government should give more money for vocational jobs and education programs, stating "they are the cornerstone of our society".[10] Steinholt believes there is a broad consensus in the labor movement that Contractual Pension ([Avtalefestet pensjon] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) bill holds a distinct working class hostile policy. Interpellations led to a debate in the City Council mainly between Steinholt and County Cabinet leader Odd Eriksen. She believed it would be disrespectful towards the working man to deprive them the right of a dignified work age, feeling that forcing them to quit their jobs at the age of 62 is too early.[11]

She is strongly opposed to oil drilling in Lofoten, arguing that oil drilling would lead to environmental waste. On July, 2009 she told Klassekampen that the government should manage to give emergency funding to Norwegian companies who worked on developing renewable energy, instead of just giving it to the banks.[12]

When asked if the government should merge small municipalities because of their economic problems, Steinholt did not believe merging to be the answer, but instead focused on the struggling economy of the municipalities, stating that the government needed to clean up the debt for the municipalities. In 2008 alone, the municipalities of Norway had a gathered debt of NOK 20.7 billion. She also stated that if Red was elected to parliament, they would propose a bill giving the municipalities an immediate transfer of NOK 10 billion.[10]
