Sweet 7 is the seventh studio album by British pop band Sugababes. It is scheduled for release in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2010 through Island Records. It is their first album since signing with Jay Z's label Roc Nation. The project features productions from RedOne, The Smeezingtons and Ne-Yo amongst others, whilst Sean Kingston has a guest vocal on the album.

"Get Sexy" was released as the lead single in August 2009 and peaked at number two, becoming the Sugababes' highest charting hit since "About You Now" in 2007 and was Keisha Buchanan's last single with the group. During a performance in Amsterdam it was confirmed that the RedOne-produced "About a Girl" will be released as the second single in November 2009 and is the first single to feature new bandmember Jade Ewen.[1] Peaking at number eight, "About a Girl" made Sweet 7 the first Sugababes album to contain two top ten singles since 2005's Taller in More Ways, which was originally recorded with only one of the members in the current lineup (Heidi Range).

Background and production

Prior to the album's creation, Sugababes signed a U.S. record deal with Jay-Z's label Roc Nation.[2] The album was recorded by Sugababes mostly in Los Angeles and New York but as a producer like them so much they did a couple of sessions in London.[3] The group primarily worked with RedOne,[4] Ryan Tedder,[4] Stargate,[3] Fernando Garibay,[5] and up-and-coming production team the Smeezingtons (Phillip Lawrence and Bruno Mars).[6] One of the album's tracks, "No More You", was written by Ne-Yo.[3] Keisha Buchanan compared the song to Rihanna's "Hate That I Love You" and "Take a Bow".[7] The group also collaborated with Sean Kingston.[7] Sugababes also joked that "Rihanna's been like our fourth member, listening to all our songs and saying what she liked and what she didn't like."[6] Buchanan told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat, the album has "definitely got the British feel throughout the album - we've not gone away and gone 'All American' on our fans."[3] Buchanan continued, "I think it's given us a fresh energy again. I think the one thing we wanted to do was come back with something different."[3] She also admitted the girls had become "complacent" around the time of Catfights and Spotlights but they also said that they are very proud of that album.[4]

Controversy and line-up change

After the release of the album's first single "Get Sexy" and just two months before its projected November release, it was reported by the media that Amelle Berrabah had quit the group.[8][9][10] Buchanan, however, denied any drama within the group and insisted that Berrabah would remain a member "for the moment". On 21 September 2009, it was officially announced that Buchanan had left the band,[11] although she stated it was not her decision to leave.[12] Buchanan, will now pursue a solo career with Island Records, whilst former Eurovision entrant Jade Ewen becomes the new Sugababe. Ewen immediately began recording her vocals over Buchanan's in preparation for the album's release in November.[13]

Release

The album was planned to be released on 9 November 2009, but since the line-up change has occurred, the album has been pushed back numerous times and will now be in stores on the 8th March 2010, according to In4merz.

It's Continental European release was reported to come much earlier with the album already scheduled for release in the Netherlands on November 20 and in Germany on 4 December 2009, [14] but Jade Ewen announced on her twitter account that the album will not be out in Europe before it is released in the UK.[15]

Singles

  • "Get Sexy", produced by The Smeezingtons, was the official first single and is credited with "successfully repositioning themselves at the hip, urban end of modern pop".[16] The Guardian called the track a "grinding, fiercely catchy R&B number".[4] It peaked at number two in the UK 6 September 2009 and is the last single from the group to feature Keisha Buchanan.
  • "About a Girl", produced by RedOne, is the second single to be released on the 9th November. The music video was filmed with Keisha but was scrapped after her departure. However, Ewen filmed the video in LA with the babes shortly after getting the record deal[17] using a new version of the song featuring her vocals. It was said that "About a Girl", the second single has 'clubby synths' and 'a chorus that clicks pretty much as soon as you hear it'.[18] So far the song has peaked at number eight in the UK as of 9 November 2009. The song sold in the region of 41,000 in its first week of release alone, despite heavy competition.

Original Tracks

Their are three formats fo the album to date; the original with former member Keisha, the new version with Jade and the sampler with Keisha's vocals. On the 21st of November the re-worked album version of "Get Sexy" featuring Jade Ewen leaked in the internet in full. In an interview, Heidi and Amelle confirmed two other tracks had been recorded, but are not included in the album. Ewen later confirmed a track called "Crash & Burn" possibly being released as the third single.More seems to Wear My Kiss will be the third single.
