Michelle Phan is a Vietnamese-American make-up artist noted for producing beauty tutorials on YouTube[1]. She is also the owner of the skincare line IQQU. As of January 26, 2010, Phan has become the most subscribed YouTube Guru of all time [2] placing her first amongst all beauty vloggers on Youtube. Phan joined Youtube on July 18, 2006 and as of February 2010, she has produced 81 videos that have been viewed in total 113,846,997[3] times. Phan is also known by the screenname "RiceBunny" which she has used on the social networking site Xanga since 2004 [4] and currently on microblogging service Twitter. She is now a spokesperson for the popular makeup brand, Lancôme. She will be featuring one video a month using Lancôme products. The rest of the videos will still maintain the same theme, style and use of a variety of products and brands.

Biography

Phan was born in Massachusetts and is of Vietnamese descent. Her mother raised her in Massachusetts, California and Florida after her parents divorced when Phan was a child. Her family was very poor and at times lived on food stamps. Michelle began her artistic training at the age of 12. She learned how to paint with watercolors and oils.[5] She had initial interests in dermatology, as her mother wanted her to take the more financially secure road of medicine, but instead pursued art college against her mother's wishes. She enrolled at Ringling College of Art and Design and majored in Illustration. She has expressed an interest in branching into the gaming industry as well. Michelle's YouTube career secured her at the top makeup artist agency in the world Jed Root[5] who manages the career of Laura Mercier, Dick Page and the late Kevyn Aucoin.

Video Style

Phan is known for her video production style that incorporates her voiceover instruction with music and text subtitles. Her videos are produced completely by her using a MacBook Pro. Her makeup techniques are inspired by her formal training in traditional painting. Michelle believes that the first step to makeup is flawless skin. She mentioned "Rembrandt would have never painted his beautiful portraits on a bumpy wrinkled ugly and old canvas, so why should you?" [5] [6] Popular beauty tutorials released on Phan's YouTube channel have included her "Romantic Valentine Look", "Brighter Larger Looking Eyes", "Makeup For Glasses", and "Mysterious Masquerade Look". Her most popular videos include the "Lady Gaga Poker Face Tutorial" with over 12,000,000 video views on YouTube [7], "Romantic Valentine Look" and "Seductive Vampire". January Michelle used special effects in her new Lady Gaga Bad Romance video, the first for a makeup guru[8]. The Buzzfeed profiled Phan on January 23, 2009 [6]overnight, turing it into a viral video [9].She is now hired by Lancôme.

Press & Professional Accomplishments

Phan's beauty tutorials have garnered her significant press and recognition across the globe.[10][11] She appeared in the August 2009 issue of Seventeen Magazine[12]. The St. Petersburg Times profiled Phan on August 23, 2009 [6]. She also appeared in the Sun Sentinel[13] on August 24, 2009 and on the popular blog BellaSugar[14] on April 19, 2009. She recently appeared in a Chilean newspaper for her Barbie video [15]

Phan worked as a makeup artist backstage at the Chris Benz fashion show during New York Fashion Week 2009. She was hired by Lancome.[16]Michelle also worked backstage as a makeup artist for the Michael Kors Spring 2010 collection. [17] . September of 2008, Michelle and her friends created a charity fashion show [18] called Fashion for Compassion [19] and raised over $20,000 for the victim.


Personal Life

Michelle is the owner of the skin care line iQQU [20]. iQQU's beauty line consist of the top selling acne serum, sunscreen, jasmine rice scrub and her upcoming makeup brushes.
