Elections in Michigan |
---|
The Michigan gubernatorial election of 2010 will be held on November 2, 2010. Governor Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat, is prohibited by the state's Constitution from seeking a third term. This resulted in a large pool of candidates which was whittled down, when the May 11 filing deadine passed, to two Democrats and five Republicans.[1]
The race is expected to be highly competitive, and the Cook Political Report rates the state as a toss-up. The non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report rates the race as leaning Republican.[2][3]
Both local and national polling show Congressman Peter Hoekstra and state Attorney General Mike Cox as the front-runners for the Republican Party nomination.[4][4][5][6] The Democratic front-runner when the 2009 polls were conducted, Lieutenant Governor John D. Cherry, withdrew from the race in January 2010.[7][8] The deadline for candidates to file nominating petitions for the August 3 state primary was 4:00 p.m., May 11, 2010.[1][9]

Other parties
Based on past election performance, the Libertarian Party of Michigan, Green Party of Michigan, and the U.S. Taxpayers Party of Michigan (affiliated with the Constitution Party) have automatic ballot access for the general election, but by state law they must nominate candidates through party conventions rather than primary elections.
Libertarian Party candidates
The Libertarian Party nominee is Kenneth Proctor.[29]
Green Party candidates
The Green Party of Michigan will hold their statewide nominating convention July 31 & August 1 in Lansing, Michigan.
U.S. Taxpayers Party candidates
The 2010 U.S. Taxpayers Party of Michigan convention was held on June 26 in East Lansing, Michigan. In a nearly unanimous vote Stacey Mathia and Chris Levels were formally nominated as candidates of the US Taxpayers Party of Michigan for the offices of Governor and Lt. Governor.
According to Stacey Mathia's official press release, "The Convention applauded Mathia’s agenda to institute Law-Abiding Constitutional Government and State Sovereignty in order to free the People of Michigan from the political oppression of big government operating outside of its authority."
The press release also stated, "Chris Levels, is currently well known as a radio talk show host on WSNL in the Flint, Michigan area. His last minute nomination speech will be available on Mathia’s website. The USTPM Convention gave him a standing applause."
Stacey Mathia directly addressed a common misconception. "Of considerable note, the mainstream media has often parroted claims that individuals like Stacey Mathia who have been heavily involved in the Tea Party movement movement are racist. As Mathia’s new choice for running mate proves, nothing could be further from the truth. The USTPM made politically powerful choices by nominating these candidates in order to “split the votes” away from other Parties with disaffected voters who have wanted honest Law-Abiding government and “changes” that The People have needed for so long. The USTPM is offering appealing candidates with the right message and the right platform to win this election. Watch for poll numbers to start reflecting their popularity as each candidate reaches out to voters across the state."
Independents
Joe Schwarz, a former Republican Member of Congress and 2002 Republican candidate for Governor has repeatedly indicated that he might run for Governor as an independent candidate.[30]
