Rónán Mullen (born 13 October 1970) is an Irish independent politician, a member of Seanad Éireann,[1] and an opinion columnist with the Irish Daily Mail. He won a seat on the National University of Ireland Seanad constituency in July 2007.[2]

A native of Ahascragh, County Galway, he now lives in Glasnevin, Dublin.

Academic qualifications

He holds a degree in Arts (English and French) from National University of Ireland, Galway and a Masters Degree in Journalism from Dublin City University. He was elected president of UCG Students' Union (now NUI, Galway Students' Union) in 1991. Mullen also holds a Diploma in Legal Studies and a Barrister-at-Law degree from King's Inns.

Work

He worked in Dundalk Institute of Technology, having been appointed to the post of Administration Officer for Academic and Student Affairs in 1994. Mullen currently work in the Communication and Personal Development department in Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown in Dublin.

From 1996 to 2001, Mullen worked in the Communications Office of the Archdiocese of Dublin and frequently appeared as a spokesperson for the Archdiocese and Cardinal Desmond Connell during that period.

He and Michael Deasy were the members of the victorious King's Inns team in The Irish Times debating final in 2000. From October 2001 to May 2006 he was a columnist for the Irish Examiner newspaper.

He was called to the Irish Bar in 2003, and is currently practising as a barrister.

Other interests

He is a regular contributor to Irish radio and TV programmes, frequently reviewing newspapers on the independent radio channel Newstalk. An Irish speaker, he also appears on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and TG4, Ireland's Irish language radio and television channels.

Mullen is to be a member of the Board of Directors of CEIST (Catholic Education Irish Schools Trust) Ltd, a new trust body for over 100 secondary schools around Ireland. He is also a member of the Corporate Board of Management of St Vincent's Trust, an education and community development agency of the Daughters of Charity in Dublin's city centre.
