Richlands High School is a public high school in Richlands, North Carolina, and has an enrollment of approximately 1050. It is part of the Onslow County School District. Darin Cloninger is the principal.

Academics

Advanced Placement courses offered by the school include Calculus AB, Statistics, Biology, US History, English Language & Composition,English Literature & Composition, and World History. Students also have the option of taking other Advanced Placement courses. Through North Carolina Virtual Public Schools, students can take courses that are not offered at RHS.

Arts include: Band, Broadcast, Chorus, Computer Arts, Dance, Drawing, Painting, Orchestra, Theatre, and Drama[4]

School Report Card

The 2006-2007 School Report Card for Richlands High School designates it as a School of Progress, with 60 to 80% of the students on grade level. The school also met all thirteen of its designated adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals. The average SAT score was 1025, eight points above the national average, with a 40% participation rate. The school ranks below the school district average in the technology and resources available to students, with fewer computers and books available per student and a library with much older books on average. Only 84% of the teaching staff is fully licensed (with the State average at 89%). Also, a higher-than-average percentage of teachers at Richlands High School have more than ten years of teaching experience. (54% have ten years or more: State average 53%)[5]

Summary

Located in the heart of Onslow County, Richlands is a small town near Jacksonville.[6] It is part of a tradition of academic excellence, in which it scores well on both North Carolina test scores, and has above state average attendance at 96%.[7] Richlands High School is accredited as four-year, comprehensive high school by the North Carolina State Department of Education. The school year consists of two ninety-day semesters with five six-week grading periods.

Curriculum

College preparatory subjects are emphasized within a broadly based program of studies. Special programs are available for gifted learning-disabled and at-risk students. Students may also participate in a variety of vocational programs at Coastal Carolina Community College. The school itself needs an upgrade in terms of resources, technology, and qualified teachers. Avid

Group of above average students who plan attending a four year university after high school. Currently AVID is offered in grades 9-12. Sophomore, Junior, and Senior AVID classes are paired with English all year, while the Freshmen are paired either with Algebra I or English. Ms. Deanna Whaley is the RHS AVID Coordinator.

Beta Club

An organization much like the National Honor Society that honors and recognizes students that achieve at an above-average level. Often during the semester doing various works of volunteer work and community service. Led by Ms. Deanna Whaley

Class Officers

Class Officers are elected at the beginning of each year and lead their class into Spirit Week and other class activities throughout the year. The Senior Class President, Christa Rhodes, is in charge of establishing a senior class trip and announces the names at graduation.

FBLA

Stands for the Future Business Leaders of America. Many can join after taking at least one business/computer course. It provides trips to local, state, and competitve events. RHS FBLA has produced two elected state officers, Susan Spencer (Central Region Vice-President 2006-2007) and Thomas Marshburn (NC FBLA State President 2007-2008) The organization is led by Mrs. Melissa Bourgeois.

FCA

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a strong club at RHS. Having various members from all sorts of backgrounds; they gather to worship and celebrate victories. Led by Mrs. Pansy Horne.

FFA

The Future Farmers of America is actually a hit in this agricultural based town. Many join in order to sharpen their skills, and just find others who share their common interest. They travel to different farms, plant various crops, and go to the NC State Fair every year. Led by Mr. Ray Smith.

Freshman Academy

Just started this year it is still in progress on how well it will actually do. It's an attempt to get the freshman class off to the right start by putting students in classes of their interests. Led by Ms. Page Recently the school's Livestock Judging Team has traveled to Raleigh, NC to participate in a Livestock Judging competition. The junior team, this was their first ever competition, placed 20th. The senior team placed 19th.

FTA

The Future Teachers of America contains students who feel like they would like to pursue a career in teaching. Advisor- Mrs. Metts

Music Department

Mr. Shreckengost is at the head of the RHS Music Department.

  • Students who are a part of the Marching Band perform at the football games, and go to the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in local downtime Jacksonville.

Poetry Club

Led by Mrs. Vogan. Students gather with poems they've written themselves or enjoy to discuss them.

Prom Committee

Led by Mrs. Melissa Bourgeois, this club works year-round to ensure a safe and enjoyable Senior Prom near the end of the school year.

REA

Richlands Engineering Academy is a new program headed by Mrs. Hackett. She has her degree in Engineering, and is by far one of the best teachers at the school. No doubt she is trying to spread her knowledge and love for the sciences.

REC

Richlands Engineering Club is best guess the club for the very serious Academy members or for those who aren't in the academy, but still wish to be in the club.

SADD

Students Against Destructive Decisions. Peers talk to peers about not doing drugs or drinking alcohol.

Student Council

This group of leaders is in charge of pep assemblies, dances, spirit week, charity work, and fundraisers. The council also works to govern the student body and collaborate with faculty to solve miscellaneous school-related problems. The organization is led by Mrs. Beth Ridge-Brown.

Volunteerism Club

Created in 2007 by Cody Freeman, this program is for a group of students to get together to volunteer. Students receive SAT hours that leads to a $1,000 scholarship for college. Can still volunteer without joining.

Yearbook Committee

This group of students work year-round to produce the awaited and very creative yearbook. The committee is run by Mrs. Vogan.

Wildcat Mentors

A group selected by the faculty and staff who have good qualities to spread to rising Freshmen and new students.

World Language Club

Known prior as the Foreign Language Club, students of all races get together to celebrate diversity in different cultures.

Facilities

A new math and science building opened starting with the 2008-2009 school year. It contains 11 new classrooms and two new Chemistry Labs,a new parking lot was also added at the school.
