"If I Had a Hammer (CSI)"

"If I Had A Hammer" is the 21st episode of the ninth season of CBS show, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. It first aired in May 2009.

Plot

Catherine Willows, CSI level 3, goes to visit a crime scene that she investigated 18 years ago. It was the crime scene of one of her first solo investigations. However, 18 years later, the convicted felon says that he was convicted of murder on very weak evidence. The evidence that Catherine followed was based on a rock that was used to break in the home that killed the octogenarian. Catherine says that the old man was killed with a hammer but she never recovered the hammer.

Upon revisiting the past crime scene with Dr. Langston, Catherine finds a hammer half buried in a tree. On the hammer there are two bloody prints that Catherine thinks belong to the suspect. Riley examines the carpet which the old man was killed on top of and finds a trace of a hammer; this puts the hammer at the crime scene. Dr. Langston and Catherine also recover the skull with hammer dents which were made with the hammer they found at the tree. However, Nick examines the hammer and tells Catherine that the suspect is not the murderer. The fingerprints on the hammer do not belong to the suspect even though the rock that Catherine found at the crime scene does have the prints of the suspect which put him at the crime scene. The suspects tells Catherine that he broke the glass with the rock and found the dead man.

As the investigation continues the team finds out that the suspect had a partner who was at the crime scene. The CSI contact her and she states that the suspect killed the old man with the hammer, and then he handed it to her so she could throw it away. At the end of the show, the audience knows that he is guilty of killing the old man and that his former girlfriend is set to have trial. He wants "the weight of the law to fall" on her.
