WE tv is an American cable television channel which is marketed towards women. It features some original programming, such as non-fiction talk shows, as well as made-for-TV movies, older feature films, and reruns of TV shows, it also shows art and fashion documentaries and reality series. Thematically, the programming is focused on women and women's issues. WE tv is owned by Rainbow Media, a subsidiary of Cablevision and is based in Bethpage, New York.
The channel showed the popular Australian, Logie Award Winning television series McLeod's Daughters for seasons 1-3. The channel dropped the show in April 2006. WE has since been under scrutiny and criticized for its decision to cancel their top rated show for less expensive reality television. A major campaign by fans to bring the show to another network in the United States has been in the works.
The channel format in recent years has shifted to reality shows, with several having topics related to weddings (ex. Bridezillas, My Fair Wedding with David Tutera). infoMania poked fun at the abundance of wedding themed shows in their segment Target Women: Wedding Shows. Other popular shows on the network include Secret Lives of Women, The Locator, and Amazing Cakes.
History
WE tv was originally known as Romance Classics when it launched in 1997. Similar to sister station, American Movie Classics, it originally aired commercial free movies, mostly in the romantic drama/comedy and television miniseries genres. This format was abandoned in 2001 when the station was re-branded as WE: Women's Entertainment. In 2006 Rainbow Media re-branded the channel once again this time under the name WE tv.[1]
We TV HD
Currently, Comcast and other cable providers have added the high definition simulcast of the channel in select markets.[citation needed]
