About

The Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia is a leading academic business school.[2]

Located in Vancouver, rated by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the world's top city in its 2009 global liveability rankings[3], the school draws from the internationalism of the city and its Pacific Rim setting to provide a unique global business perspective.

The school is situated in the heart of the UBC campus, home to forest, ocean and mountain vistas. A second campus, UBC Robson Square, is located in the heart of Vancouver's downtown peninsula.

In 2009, a significant new alliance was formed between the Sauder School and the Faculty of Management at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, British Columbia. The new alliance provides increased opportunities for research, knowledge and resources sharing, career services, and student mobility.

History

The business school, which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2006, was established as the UBC Faculty of Commerce in 1956.[4]

  • 1929 – In response to lobbying by the business community, represented by members of the Vancouver Board of Trade, the university offers its first Bachelor of Commerce degree, through the Faculty of Arts and Science. A Department of Commerce (1939) and a School of Commerce (1950) are formed later.
  • 1950 – Community outreach and executive education partnerships are forged with the establishment of the Sales and Marketing Executive Program. Soon thereafter, partnerships were established with C.G.S, C.A., C.M.A, Banff School of Management, Real Estate Institute and the Real Estate Council of British Columbia.
  • 1952 – Graduate business education begins at UBC, with the introduction of the Master of Commerce, later replaced by the MBA (1955).
  • 1956 – The university establishes a Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, with E.D. McPhee as the first Dean. While maintaining its official name for ceremonial purposes, the Faculty later re-brands itself as UBC Commerce.
  • 1958 – The Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration reaches out internationally by helping to establish two key overseas business schools in Malaysia (1961), and Singapore (1962). This set the stage for a leadership role in business education in both China and Hong Kong.
  • 1965 – The Henry Angus Building, home of the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, officially opens in September.
  • 1969 – The Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration receives approval to launch a new PhD, accepting doctoral students for study in advanced business administration.
  • 1992 – The David Lam Management Research Centre opens. Building construction was made possible through a gift from David See-Chai Lam, former Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, and his wife Dorothy. The building is home to the David Lam Management Research Library.
  • 2001 – UBC celebrates the opening of its new downtown teaching facilities at UBC Robson Square, and new home of the business school’s Executive Education office.
  • June 5, 2003 – UBC is the recipient of the largest single private donation ever made in support of a Canadian business school with a gift from Dr. William Sauder, BCom 1948, Chancellor Emeritus of UBC and Chairman of Interfor and his family. In recognition of his support, the business school is renamed the Sauder School of Business.
  • November 2, 2006 – UBC announce the naming of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School at the Sauder School of Business. The announcement is made in recognition of Robert H. Lee’s generous gift in support of graduate education at the Sauder School of Business and his long-term dedication to UBC.
  • February 15, 2007 – B.C. business leader and longstanding UBC supporter Hari B. Varshney makes a $1 million gift to Sauder to establish the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre at the Sauder School of Business.
  • March 15, 2007 – Canaccord Capital makes a $1.5 million gift to establish a new learning commons at the Sauder School of Business David Lam Management Research Library. The gift honours Canaccord chairman and founder Peter Brown, a Vancouver business leader and former chair of the UBC Board of Governors. The new facility is to be named The Canaccord Learning Commons.
  • September 2, 2009 - MBA House, the UBC residence devoted to graduate business students and the first of its kind in Canada, is opened at Sauder's Robert H. Lee Graduate School.
  • January 14, 2010 – The Sauder School of Business and the Robert H. Lee Graduate School unveil the completed first phase of an $85 million renewal and expansion. Adding 50,000 square feet (4,600 m2) to the existing 216,000 square feet (20,100 m2) of the Henry Angus Building, the expansion provides a new facility for the Robert H. Lee Graduate School and a dedicated undergraduate centre.

Programs

The Sauder School of Business offers the following programs:

Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)

The four-year BCom program provides graduates with the skills to work in a wide variety of disciplines. Students can choose from 10 majors, including finance, management information systems, marketing, and urban land economics. Relevant lectures and case studies are used throughout the program to bring today's business issues into the classroom.[5]

Masters of Business Administration (MBA)

The 15-month MBA is an innovative educational experience that includes an integrated core, an internship and exchange opportunities. Students choose from eight areas of specialization: entrepreneurship, finance, information technology management, marketing, organizational behaviour and human resources, sustainability and business, strategic management and supply chain management, and 10 areas of sub-specialization, which also include business intelligence, accounting, and international business. The full-time MBA boasts one of North America's most culturally diverse student bodies, with 55 to 60% of students coming from outside Canada. In 2009, students came from 35 countries, speaking 42 languages. Sauder also offer a 28-month Part-Time MBA in Vancouver and a 20-month International MBA in Shanghai.[6]
The Sauder School of Business' MBA program was indexed as the 6th best in Canada and the 31st best in North America in the 2010 QS Global 200 Business Schools Report[7].

Master of Management in OR (Master of Management in Operations Research)

Designed for students with quantitative backgrounds, the 16-month UBC Master of Management in Operations Research (MM in OR) program provides outstanding preparation for solving problems resulting from operational challenges in today's leading businesses. [8]

MSc/PhD

Both the MSc and PhD programs are designed for students who intend to make significant contributions to knowledge in their fields of specialization. Students receive individual attention from the start and are often engaged in joint research with faculty members within one year in their programs. Sauder's PhD graduates go on to professorships at leading universities world-wide as well as positions in government and industry.[9]

Executive Education

Executive Education delivers a full spectrum of learning opportunities, from two to six day business management courses to project management certificates to full degree programs. Clients can partner with Sauder Custom Services to create custom programs for management needs or build leadership capacity with the Accelerated Leadership Program, designed to transform high-potential performers into outstanding leaders. Sauder's Executive Education program is the largest of its kind in Western Canada.[10]

Diploma in Accounting

DAP is a program designed to prepare university graduates who have limited training in accounting for entry into a professional designation program. For individuals wanting to broaden their business skills, the program also represents an excellent opportunity for professional development.[11]

Real Estate Division

RED programs deliver British Columbia's (and much of Canada's) real estate educational programming and include real estate licensing courses; an Urban Land Economics Diploma Program; a nationally-recognized Certificate Program in Real Property Assessment; and a national online education program for Real Property Appraisal. In addition, RED provides a variety of online continuing professional development courses for the real estate industry.[12]
