FIFA 12

Would it be possible to consider the FIFA 12 page for restoration given that it is now 2011 and EA Sports has discussed the game publicly? Thank you. --Postmechanical (talk) 16:20, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fractint

I'm new here and not even sure if this is the right place for making this comment, so please bear with me. I'm Bert Tyler, the original author of the freeware Fractint program (but of course can't prove that here). I edited the Wikipedia entry on Fractint to give credit to Dave Warker for the concept of using integer math to generate fractals, replacing the (incorrect) entry stating that Fractint was based on the DKMANDEL program. You correctly removed the entire history section of that article until the dispute could be resolved. I'd like to prove to you that I'm me but don't know how to do so. My email address has changed since the old FRACTINT.HLP file was generated (from bert.tyler@oef.com to bert.tyler@verizon.net), but my home phone number is the same as is in that file. Help! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.227.240.62 (talk) 19:07, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bert, thanks for contacting me. I'm quite willing to trust anything you say in this matter, however this encyclopedia is largely generated by collating information from reliable secondary sources first (e.g. reviews in magazines, books), and then the primary source (e.g. Fractint and its documentation). If Warker isn't mentioned in either of these kinds of sources then unfortunately we can't mention him here - but perhaps you are in the best position to locate an appropriate source (or update the official website?) Thanks, Marasmusine (talk) 23:40, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info. I've contacted Timothy Wegner (currently the prime Fractint developer and maintainer of the fractint.org website) to see what we can do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.227.240.62 (talk) 16:31, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is Timothy Wegner. I manage the fractint mailing list and am the current fractint project coordinator and have been for a very long time (early 1990's). I started collaborating with Bert in 1989 or so in the Compuserve graphics forum. Bert and I (and a few others) are authors of the Waite Group's "Fractal Creations" and "Fractals for Windows" books. Yes that comment above is really Bert Tyler talking. He is the one in the best position to know the source of integer math. I was not aware of Dave Warker's role in giving Bert the idea, and would be inclined to credit Bert himself, but I can confirm that fractint was NOT based on DKmandel. My suggestion would be to just delete the statement about DKMANDEL. On another subject, the "official" fractint websites are fractint.net and fractint.org, which are current mirrors of each other. I think the http://www.nahee.com/spanky/www/fractint/fractint.html site deserves to be a link in the article, it's just misleading to say it's the "official" site. It's run by Paul N. Lee, who while a long time participant in the fractint mailing list. This is not a big deal. I'll suggest a small wording change. Twegner (talk) 03:31, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maramusine, I didn't read your response to Bert carefully enough. I'll work out with Bert what he wants to say about the history, and we'll update both the fractint website and the documentation accordingly and let you know. Then you will have an outside source to update the wikipedia article if you wish. Twegner (talk) 15:54, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Timothy; as long as we work in accordance with WP:PRIMARY, this will be acceptable. Thanks, Marasmusine (talk) 23:32, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is Bert again, with good (but a bit embarrassing) news: Tim and I have found a published source that includes a brief description of the birth of Fractint. Fractal Creations, 2nd edition, ISBN 1-878739-34-4, published by the Waite Group Press in 1993, written by Tim Wegner and Bert Tyler. (Yes, Tim and I wrote a book about Fractint. That included comments on how it got started. And then we both forgot about that we'd written those comments in the book. That's kind of embarrassing.) Unfortunately, that text does not mention Dave Warker by name; only as a "friend" of Bert.

At any rate, on page 461 in the "About the Authors" section is the following text: "Bert Tyler is Fractint's original author. ... Bert's involvement with the program began when he downloaded a "Mandelbrot generator" program, fired it up on his brand-new 80386-based PC with no math coprocessor - and then broke out of the program two hours later when it had drawn only half of its first image. Bert remembered that a friend of his [that's Dave, but the book doesn't say that] had written a Mandelbrot generator for a TI-based processor that used integer math and decided to try programming something similar for his 386 - and Fractint was born."

Hopefully that helps things. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.227.240.62 (talk) 22:12, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK folks, I took a crack at editing the page, I documented what I did in the Fractint page discussion section. I forgot to edit the note that got added with my edit, I did more than undo Maramusine's edit. This was my first attempt at doing anything on wikipedia. All these years I have avoided touching the Wikipedia fractint page because I understood that in general people should not edit pages about their own projects. I certainly could greatly beef up the fractint page but I assume it would be inappropriate, and I'm happy to leave it alone. I only intervened to rescue Bert, who didn't quite realize what he was doing when he made corrections to the page in his inimitible style :-) Twegner (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 16:29, 18 December 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Best For Film

You deleted the page for Best For Film whilst I was in the process of writing it! I feel it's hugely unfair to delete a page for not jumping through all the relevant hoops without giving me a chance to finish jumping, not to mention flying in the face of the standing instruction not to frighten newbies (you will notice that I have never before created a page). I would appreciate you at least letting me finish the entry before making snap judgements. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmu2108 (talkcontribs) 14:30, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

Hi Marasmusine, why did you delete wiki page on Ulticom, it's a well known company in its fields, I have seen tens of other similar companies, for instance if you go in the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_delivery_controller Could you restore it and tell what should be changed in order to make it acceptable (like the others). thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martinlaurentjp (talkcontribs) 15:02, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Space Tanks

Hi Marasmusine . please remove your latest changes . yesterday i tryed to improve that spacetanks acrticle -now it's deleted?! - no external links?!, not reviewed @fileplanet???!! just kidding? its a pity everyone can delete or redirect anything @wiki without any rules ?! please undo your latest entrys. and I just kick the download link ;-) type "spacetanks" in google (search pictures like case-covers) and you'll see that game were sold in any Shops where one could buy worms, c & c etc. in 2003 -5 (in germany , france, UK , Russia and more ) please let us "talk" (I'am one of the developers) .. as i saw ST-article i just wanted to fix that article in my vacances ->such as (broken links, few links from other sites etc, no cover picture) etc.

No Reviews?? okay many internet stuff is lost since 2003)BUT the game got many reviews , got revies in TV and youtube and got very good reviews Magazines such as in ComputerBild (with very good) , C't-magazine (very good) etc.pp

- sorry (i know about your admin status) but it's some kind of vandalsim you did (in my opinion) -since other people wasting their time with writing articles ... where is a deletion-discussion?? ' must say weird things happen here @wiki!

sure i'am not so familiar with wiki ,-) ... I just wanted to fix some issues and upload a cover picture ;-(( Pardon -I didn't know about forbidden download links (its a public domain version) but ok .... please support me to do a nice article instead of removing it.

here one can find e.g. ST in a game pack (german version) http://www.rebuy.de/i,71732/pc-spiele/spacetanks-tropico-railroad-tycoon2-platinum

that funny : first i saw the wiki entry of SpaceTanks i saw a orphan issue (with statement : please linke it from other sites ) .. so i was searching for adequate sites like artillery game and worms clones etc ... but you removed those links too- nice ;-( what about this one ..??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Play_on_Tape

you've forgotten to delete it ??

Hi Stefan. We have articles on games that are sufficiently notable. This is generally shown with reviews in magazines or particular websites. I redirected the Space Tanks article as suggested at WP:PRODUCT guidelines, since no coverage was presented in the article and I couldn't find any.
If you can give me further details about the ComputerBild and C't-magazine reviews, I will gladly improve the article with them. Marasmusine (talk) 13:32, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
RE Press_Play_on_Tape: I won't remove this link as it is directly relevant. Other links I removed in cases where Space Tanks was being used as an "example". Since we currently can't demonstrate that it is exemplary, there's no need to list it. Again, this can change if you can show me "significant coverage". Marasmusine (talk) 13:45, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

yes of course i can .... and thank you for fast reply!! as i said i just wanted a nice informative article without broken links and pictures... in the mo i'am busy but i 'll come back to you on sunday ...okay? okay computerbild and ct are in german language there is also a review done by a retromagazin like ZZAP (forgot the name yet) thanx in advance , stefan could you tell me where i can find your email-address? tehn i'll come back to you via mail-okay? sincereely , stefan

Hello Marasmusine hope I found the stuff you wanted:

a few Germans Magazines http://www.yawthrust.com/download/bz.jpg http://www.yawthrust.com/download/new_beat.jpg

the Computerbild Spiele -Mag. has nothing online. so here you get the scans :

Hi Stefan. Language isn't a problem - as long as I can see that they are solid reviews I can always work out some kind of translation. The retro magazine might be "Retro Gamer". Emailing the magazine scans to me is might be possible through wiki-mail - try the "E-mail this user" link under the toolbox on the left-hand side of this page. btw: you wrote something about 7 days until removing the article -

but you did it in just 4 mins ? !
hope the "coverage" is effectual to you and the spacetanks site comes back very soon again;-)

Thanks for the links. I tried to translate the last section of the Computer Bild review, since this was the final "Judgement". However, the only bits I could work out were the criticisms. Perhaps you can help me at User:Marasmusine/stuff. Marasmusine (talk) 18:23, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

okay thank you very much. of course i can help to translate it . would suggest to translatete simply the whole review since it's not too large i think. maybe we can take the headlines and screenshots from computerbild spiele to combine this with the new (coming soon ) english text . maybe with permission of them ...what do you think?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Drecksackblase (talkcontribs) 20:06, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copying the whole thing would be incompatible with our GFDL license and our manual of style. We just need to summarize reviewers' opinions. Marasmusine (talk) 07:59, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

okay no prob - but hopefully not only the bad things ;-) btw: what do you think about the press play on tape- deletion ?! can't understand whats up there ... (have seen them in denmark /roskide festival must note : it was more fun than nick cave, neil young and judas priest there in roskilde. maybe its a geek band but still a good one !

No, not just the bad things! I need some help with the Computer Bild translation because I feel that there were positive comments but couldn't quite work out what they were.
The PPoT deletion appears to be compliant with policy. The discussion was here. As usual, there's no prejudice against recreating the article should the band become notable. Hello Marasmusine, As promised i came back to you with some help. thanks lot for you patience with me and your good work here at wiki.

first of all: could we put the following link below ==gamePlay== rubric?

http://www.yawthrust.com/st_manual/index.htm

could help to understand possible strategys etc. a few textlines sadly are fat that's a bit ugly (done by pdf2html -converter ) maybe i can fix it later on.

Ok .. so here we go ... i remember in one english review which covers the most other estimations about ST. / done by Brain Maupin.

http://www.yawthrust.com/reviews/pcgamesw.html

here a few other independent reviews

I think all in all they match in one POSITIVE point :

  • very good long time motivation

ComnputerBild Spiele:

...the base idea isn't really new but it animates the combatans to attack unerringly each other with crazy weapons despite of all the obstacles...

http://www.demonews.de/reviews/index.php?artikel=130&bs=1 older stuff which one maybe can't find in the net anymore:

http://www.yawthrust.com/reviews/funfak.html http://www.yawthrust.com/reviews/juko.html http://www.yawthrust.com/reviews/knarrina.html http://www.yawthrust.com/reviews/maerk.html http://www.yawthrust.com/reviews/splashgames.html

and 5 cows from tucows http://www.yawthrust.com/reviews/tucows.html (because of the alten8 marketing in uk it dissapear from tucows.

Stefan's response about critics :

  • combat judge

oh yes the ugly and maybe a bit daffy "combat judge" i can retort: maybe true but it is logically necessary to inform the players via sound and videoFX (robots pointing fingers) like "its your turn player 1" etc... else one can mix-up the player-order ;-) the voice was inspired from the voice of "the speaking bomb" of John Carpenters movie : "dark star" around 1974 ;-) in a C't TV- review they mixed it up with E.T.'s voice ,-)

  • too few planet constellations

no! that's balderdash .... the planets were shuffled randomly but one can't see everything in the first few rounds. ComputerBild tested it a few hours - to save the game level in tanskshop would help;-) after 10 rounds of playing everyting can happen but it's shuffled and it's (of course possible that the next plantet- system resembles the antecessor-system. spacetanks has no prefabricated level design there are just single elements like ufos, space insects, suns, blackholes asteroid rings etc and many things more which were shuffled and cobined by the levelengine. after 10 rounds one have to arrange with everything. to force a faster/harder game flow (with varied planet-systems and aliens etc) just save the game in Tankshop afer each round you've survived. Sometimes it can happen that players get nearly the same planet system but maybe then one can find spacepumkins , aliens or other obstacles - one can check this via zooming in/ out.

  • too few settings to play with

there is a menu one can reach via escape key here one can find entrys like level, particles, sound etc.

Interviews (All In One) -free translation:

Rainer Silberstein / reporter:

What was the intention to write another retro game like "SpaceTanks" ?

YawThrust: We just wanted to do a game like the c64 classic Artillery Duel 'cos it was pure fun and is quite simple to understand ;-) for us as programmers ,-) on the other hand it should combine retro flair with the pc power of the present. we just wanted to do a game which one can play as developer too.

Stefan Nagel: its needful to have a determnistic gameplay with pixel exact collisions, proper physics and well AI. -the only random one can find in ST is the shuffling of Levels .

Since as player you have the complete freedom to do what you want (and nearly everything is working) You (as the developer) can play it with fun even though you should know each scene and level of the game cos you did it. That's the reason we wanted to do a physic simulation- clear rules and endless situations whilst playing -and long time motivation forced by non pre designed levels. I really like this "mother of all games" principal -a mixture of trail and error and planning and of course wondering. and a straigh forward, tough-minded realization e.g. whilst your "winner" ceremony it can happen very quickly that your combatant turns the match to drawn ´cos maybe it´s tank track hits you!

so both tanks are destroyed. Malicious joy is most important for ST ;-) end of interview.

Space´Tanks isn't a Clone! To design a proper turn based concept for this genre it was required to put the tanks on planets else the turn based trail end error -pricipal would suffer.

And thats the main difference /novelty beteen ST and other games like warheads gravity wars. you can try out to hit the enemy with each shot. Since there is no fast movement (like in warheads) one can approximate to the enemy. so ST is a GravitySim space-version of Artillery Duel or PocketTanks including realtime aspects and not a Clone.

Walterjack (talk) 15:26, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I need a few moments. I suspect that I'll edit it a bit but I'll put your original text on the talk page. Marasmusine (talk) 15:33, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is certainly enough there to verify existence. However, unfortunately most of the text of the article was taken verbatim form one of the sources Walterjack has listed (http://www.cellagallery.com/Site_2/Madigan_Album/Madigan_Album.html) so the article cannot be restored, as it was a copyright infringement. Nevertheless, it should be possible to write a new article from scratch using those sources. The opening sentences of the article seem to be OK as far as I can see, and they could be restored. JamesBWatson (talk) 15:35, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oops! Thanks James, I've taken the copied text back off the talk page. Marasmusine (talk) 15:41, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was intending to go ahead and restore the part of the article which seemed acceptable. However, I see you have already made a start, and it's probably better not to have two of us getting in one another's way, so I will leave you to it. JamesBWatson (talk) 15:45, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

See No Evil (film) article

You un-linked several references to Dan Madigan on the See No Evil (film) page. I see that there have been some issues with the (apparently new?) Dan Madigan page but those appear to be getting resolved. It appears that the links should go back in, and would appear to have been OK as red-links, but your stated reason for removing them (db-g3) gives me pause. What was the justification for that, and does it remain? Rwessel (talk) 17:21, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lisog article

I disagree that the Lisog (Linux Solution Group) is irrelevant. It is the largest open source organization in Germany. There are wellknown members like IBM, Fujitsu, RedHat, Novell, Sopera. Lisog has a German wikipedia article since years. Is this not enough reputation?

Here are some further references:

Editing Question Re: Tupelo Press Article

Hello,

I'd like to undo the first edit (not the rest on the page) to "Tupelo Press" made on 31 March 2010 by "jschley," as there seems to be a close connection between the editor and the material added, which has resulted in there being a longer mention of one of the press staff members than of the founding publisher. As the editor didn't add any other staff members, it seems non-neutral...but I don't want to step on toes or break rules. Also, I can't figure out how to undo just the one edit made on 31 March 2010 and not the others. Help?

Thanks, Books2read (talk) 16:02, 12 November 2010 (UTC)Books2read[reply]

Hi, Marasmusine.

I totally agree with your blanking ACDSee and redirecting it; however, since this article has once been a subject of an AFD, I think we should give it one more chance to establish its notability. I think it won't hurt if we leave it alone for another seven days in which it will be discussed in another AFD. Maybe someone come to its rescue.

At Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games/Sources#XBLAfans I've responded with some comments and I'd like to get an updated opinion from you. --Teancum (talk) 18:34, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the late response, I've barely had a moment to myself this week. I'll take a closer look soon. Marasmusine (talk) 05:25, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marasmusine, what I wrote about the game, I know from playing the game for countless hours (i.e. details about the gameplay, which could easily be verified by playing the game) and because I used to be close friends with one of the devs. I'm afraid there are very few articles left about it, since it's been five years since its release. Even the official page has been taken down by now, luckily I found a copy on web.archive.org . But this is also one of the reasons I started the article, because I'm a big fan and there's so little real information on it on the internet. I just found it deserved a wikipedia-entry, for those looking for information but unable to find any. If there's still any passages that you feel strongly require citing another source, could you please tell me what those are? Maybe I could try and find something. Pete Gutterson (talk) 01:58, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sources have been added. If you are still not satisfied, please mark the passages where you feel citations are needed, instead of proposing the entire article for deletion. Thank you. Pete Gutterson (talk) 21:50, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Diaspora article

Hey. I need you to have a look at the Diaspora article. I've removed a section from the article dealing with remakes/clones specifically per WP:VG/EL. A user popped to flame me on my talk page as a result, and has later come onto the talk-page to edit-war. I have listed the policies and explained how the user would go about keeping them in the article; namely presenting any coverage in reliable sources, the user hasn't really presented any arguments, and has gone back to personal attacks, so I think I need you to stick your nose into the (lack of) debate. Eik Corell (talk) 23:02, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Marasmusine, I just saw the article you created at Wonderland Online-- the IGN source seems to be a press release... is there any other third party sources we could use to make it pass WP:GNG? Nomader (Talk) 02:18, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I understand. I did a search myself and I couldn't find anything outside of the sources you already have. Just because it's a request doesn't give it inherent notability, but you have the interview... I think you should be fine keeping it up for now, but if someone were to nominate it for deletion, I'm not sure which way it would go. Nomader (Talk) 18:36, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Consistent vandalism from a school IP

209.57.92.144's edits over the last few months have consisted solely of vandalism. It seems like it has been given impunity because it belongs to a high-school. What is the policy on public IPs and vandalism, by the way? It seems some are blocked, others are just kind of left to simmer between vandalizing sessions it seems. Eik Corell (talk) 16:23, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. I have left a final warning. Of course we can't issue long blocks for schools, as we don't want to prevent legitimate school work. We can issue a shorter one to temporarily prevent continuing damage. Marasmusine (talk) 18:45, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, When I created the page I intended to make a comment of the only reference available, that is the article on PC Magazine. I read the article, and wrote about the contents stated in that article. I quoted a sentence from that article as well.
Even though I am currently playing that game, I have not added anything that was not stated in the PC Magazine article. I could expand a lot on that article, given my personal experience, but I didn't do that because I understood that every information on the wiki must be supported by a printed and official source.
I saw someone has repeatedly added a link to join the game. Well, I don't know who it was. I wasn't. During this long time, I have tried to see if there were other public sources available, but to no avail.
Let me know if it's worth that I rewrite the article in a manner that doesn't sound like an advertisement. I repeat that I wrote only what I found in the article I sent you for reference. Any help or suggestion about the writing style is welcomed. RubenWan (talk) 02:37, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
