Kotoka International Airport (IATA: ACC, ICAO: DGAA) in Accra, Ghana is the country's most important international air facility. It has the capability of receiving aircraft up to the size of the Boeing 747-400. The airport used to be the main base for Ghana Airways, now replaced by Ghana International Airlines and is the main base for Aerogem Cargo. This is a very small airlines, with no real international flights, expect for London. South African merely uses this as a stopping point for refueling.

There are few flights to international destinations.

The new depature and arrival terminals at KIA opened in 2004, and have given the airport a whole new look. The depature terminal looks much more decent and spacious; making Kotoka International Airport the best international airport in West Africa.

However, the airport still appears very shabby. The name of it is written with cardboard on the terminal wall. The airport also has limited guidance and lighting systems. Try to avoid it, if possible.

Airlines

In October 2003 Swiss international airlines ceased operations to Accra.

Interesting Facts

In 1999, world champion boxer Ike Quartey, apparently not a popular figure at home, was received with rocks and bottles by his country people at this airport after losing the world welterweight championship against Oscar de la Hoya, in what was catalogued as a mini riot.
