Yotsuba & Da Vinci

Literary magazine Da Vinci has a special feature on Yotsuba&! in this month's issue, including an interview with Azuma-sensei (a pretty rare occurrence, I believe). Possibly an interesting source for this article? I tried to pick up a copy at my local Japanese library, but it was sold out already. Bikasuishin (talk) 16:03, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good source. I say go for it if you can snag a copy.--SeizureDog (talk) 16:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, definitely a good source. If anyone can snag and use it, that would be a big help. —Quasirandom (talk) 17:52, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
pity no one seems to have been able to get a-hold of this article+interview... —Quasirandom (talk) 21:33, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ADV Website dead

Our link to ADV's Yotsuba&! page is dead. In fact, as far as I can tell, they've removed all manga information, period, though they still have sidebar links as if it's there. Unless, maybe, their website is merely borked and/or my search fu is weak like a weak thing. This wouldn't be much of a problem, but we also use that site as a reference -- which is now dead. Can anyone dig up a replacement link from ADV's page? If not, time to look for a replacement citation. —Quasirandom (talk) 23:21, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Check that one from Waybeck Machine :p : Yotsuba& ADV on Wayback Machine KrebMarkt 08:19, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done replaced the old with one to wayback machine.--KrebMarkt 21:38, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For the vol 5 issue, we should use that one Vol5 profile on ANN as wayback machine has only archive from october 2007 :( KrebMarkt 08:07, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's the page I was going to suggest if we can't get an archive. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:26, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well we had to with the ANN link. Wayback machine doesn't have archive for the period where Vol 5 was in ADV store :( KrebMarkt 20:34, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Additional reviews

In addition to English reviews, there's also these reviews of the French editions (hat tip to User:KrebMarkt for these):

These will have to be digested by someone who didn't choose Spanish and German as his foreign languages in high school. —Quasirandom (talk) 01:03, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Other English notice:

Somehow overlooked that when first compiling reviews. —Quasirandom (talk) 00:44, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added another, also overlooked review. Should get to these sometime. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:15, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Another of, ah, marginal reliability. I mean, it's a real newspaper -- published by journalism students. —Quasirandom (talk) 20:19, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some German notice:

More to come, I hope. —Quasirandom (talk) 01:01, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New find Rather old but in English du9 was mentioned 4 times in Comics related publications as a pertinent source for reviewing works in all their singularity. --KrebMarkt 13:10, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I could have sworn I'd used that review. I know I came across it several times. Maybe I had doubts about its reliability, and so left it out? I dunno. Good to hear it's considered reliable, though. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:07, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yotsuba&! is only discussed in passing in this article on moe, but it's interestingly critical. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:13, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

At least our discussion pages are worth mention. Now if it's our articles, it will be even better ;) --KrebMarkt 14:47, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reviews of the Yen Press editions are starting to show up -- they've apparently been generous in supplying all 6 volumes -- including:

More to come, I hope. —Quasirandom (talk) 22:14, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some notice of volume 7 is showing up:

Is that one RS? --KrebMarkt 17:52, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It needs to be vetted by the project, with feedback from WP:COMICS as the site reviews more of that than manga. —Quasirandom (talk) 18:00, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Will keep looking. —Quasirandom (talk) 20:44, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Whee, that's a glowing review, for all its Evidence Against. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:13, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Non-English publishers

Yo,

You are aware that all know (or so) non-English have now references in the List of Yotsuba&! chapters. We have to move those refs in here however i don't know how to put them. Right now putting them in the manga section feel a bit awkward. It would need some ironing to insert them. Thanks --KrebMarkt 18:10, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah -- currently the Manga section isn't really following the guidelines of WP:SS. Part of this is because of edits made to the chapter list when it went through FAC, which weren't mirrored back here. My suggestion is that we copy over the Lead from the chapter list then edit it down to remove things that aren't needed (such as statements that provide context). —Quasirandom (talk) 19:56, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ugly jury rigged the manga sectio please copy-edit it ;) --KrebMarkt 20:41, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I think. —Quasirandom (talk) 15:29, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Look Good and shiny :)
Can you when you will have real spare time (lowest priority) get a look at Azumanga Daioh. I will fix some references issues but i'm no good to get MOS issues. Azumanga Daioh will be GA re-assessed so better we anticipate it rather than having to react in sort of hurry. Thanks --KrebMarkt 18:36, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Ping me when you think you've got the content worked out. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:30, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA Reassessment

This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Yotsuba&!/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

Starting GA reassessment. Jezhotwells (talk) 18:15, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a well written article, which appears to thoroughly cover the subject. I found one deadlink (ref #57 - [1]) , which is unfortunately not available at the Internet Archive Wayback machine, but I assume good faith and the reference does contain a quote. There are four images, correctly tagged with non-free use rationales. No more are needed, I think. All the references that I have been able to check support the statements and appear to be [[WP:RS[]] in context, written by people who appear to be regularly cited cources.

I am intrigued by the name Yotsuba&! and why the ampersand and excalamation mark are used, but that is not relevant to this assessment. I am happy to confirm GA status. Jezhotwells (talk) 18:34, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up on the dead link -- Anime on DVD moved to Mania.com a couple years ago, and it looks like the forwarding no longer works. The new url is http://www.mania.com/yotsuba-vol-01_article_82171.html -- I'll replace it in the article.
And thanks for the article review. There's a handful of improvements I'd like to make, including incorporating some additional Reception info listed on the talk page, but I hadn't gotten to them. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:12, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and the & comes from the chapter title formats while the ! comes from Yotsuba's way of living at full throttle. Very fun. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:18, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stock unproved stuff HERE

The stuff stoked here need citation to pass WP:V --KrebMarkt 17:02, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Yotsuba&! belongs to a genre of manga called ikuji (child-care). Other examples of this genre include Baby & Me and Aishiteruze Baby."
That's an interesting statement. Usagi Drop would be another example, I assume, as would My Girl by Mizu Sahara and Aiko Desho! by Masakazu Ooi. Time for some research. —Quasirandom (talk) 17:47, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of note, the ja.wiki page, which significantly does not mention Yotsuba&! or any example with a child older than a toddler -- and more usually an infant. It's looking like it's a real genre, but this isn't an example. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:22, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Guess i learned something new about manga today ;) --KrebMarkt 14:39, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There's manga about everything, including train spotting and auto repair. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:41, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yotsuba&Idea

No joke here just enjoy !!

Idea #334 & French publisher blog

A pity it's sold out but that was expected. --KrebMarkt 15:46, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pity indeed. The thumbnail on the Idea page on the left of the first row is (on the left) a two-page spread from volume 5 and (right) the cover designs (with wraparounds) of the eight volumes. Plus all the stuff shown in the blog post. This is ... worth incorporating, if we can figure out where in Reception it goes. —Quasirandom (talk) 16:40, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
From what i undestand IDEA is a magazine focused on design that issue is the first one manga & light novel cover/packaging design & art. Yotsuba&! was the case study showing a gallery on the whole franchise including non Japanese edition covers as mentioned in its French publisher blog but also advertisement & others support materials released. A great form of recognition from what seems a venerable publication and beyond the usual field of manga. --KrebMarkt 19:50, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed a Japanese magazine focused on design -- they've interviewed type designers from all over (especially Europe) and furniture designers; a recent issue focused on book design in China. "Case study" is a good way of putting it. —Quasirandom (talk) 20:11, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There -- incorporated a mention. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:47, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job. Look great and shiny with sparks here & there :) --KrebMarkt 20:43, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yen edition changes

One significant one: Fuka has been changed to Fuuka. Since guidelines say that, if there's multiple versions of names in English, use the "best-known" one, and this edition is only just out (mine arrived from Amazon today), I think we should hold off on changing this in the article. Thoughts? —Quasirandom (talk) 00:51, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't it be easier to use Fūka throughout? David Bailey (talk) 09:23, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with that is, per WP:ENGLISH, we have to use a spelling of (one of) the official English edition(s) -- specifically, the best-known English spelling. And Fūka is never used by either ADV or Yen, only Fuka and Fuuka, respectively. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:08, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, does anyone have the new volume 5? I'm wondering what Yen Press did with Danbo/Cardbo's name. —Quasirandom (talk) 17:51, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In volume 6, Miura said Danbo. 71.49.205.253 (talk) 06:50, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Or started to -- I was wondering what the exact name is. —Quasirandom (talk) 15:11, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Found: Yen Press Explains Danbo vs. Cardbo and Other Yotsuba&! Manga Mysteries at about.com. David Bailey (talk) 21:22, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ooo -- useful interview, and not just for Danbo. Thanks! —Quasirandom (talk) 21:34, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A development part sub-section. --KrebMarkt 21:41, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Or paragraph at least -- adaptation issues. Especially if we can get a good translation of the bit below this one. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:34, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do we have a fluent Japanese speaker in the house?

From the committee interview of Azuma on winning the Japan Media Arts Award:

Q5: 作品をつくるうえで最も苦労する部分、またはこだわる部分はどこですか?
A5: 一番苦労するのはネーム(セリフ)。やりたくないくらいです。こだわるのは、説明しやすいところでは画面のつくり方でしょうか。記号と写実のバランスとか。人物と背景が乖離(かいり)していなくて、キャラクターが「そこにいる」感じをどう描くか。漫画になりすぎないように描く感じといいますか。

Based on the English transcript, this looks potentially useful as Development info, but the official translation is slightly garbled. Can anyone come up with a fluid translation, to confirm this? (I know the "name" is the storyboard version done as an outline -- thank you Bakuman.) —Quasirandom (talk) 15:59, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A slightly more fluent translation:

Q5: Please tell us the most difficult or considerable part when you create your work.
A5: What I struggle with the most is the "name," [TN: manga jargon for first draft, equivalent to a storyboard ], that is, creating the story or dialog. It’s so hard that I don’t even want to do it. What I care about, to give an example that is easy for me to explain, is how to design a picture, so that there is a balance between symbols [TN: not sure about that word] and realism. How to depict the touch [TN: ??] of a character being "really there," where the character and the background do not lose contact with each other. What I would hope for is that it (the picture) does not become too cartoony.

Made by revising the official translation, rather than starting fresh -- because I'm not that fluent yet. With this, I think we can expand a bit on the Development section. —Quasirandom (talk) 16:55, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Manga cover in article

Can someone change the main article image to the yen press version? —Preceding unsigned comment added by SupaPhly (talkcontribs) 05:46, 27 September 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Why? Please give some arguments? I don't want any similar discussion to what happened here. Thanks. --KrebMarkt 13:14, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
SupaPhly, just so you know, generally articles keep whatever cover it was first given unless there's a substantive reason (like crappy image quality, or it wasn't the first volume) to change it. This is mainly to avoid edit-warring (especially between those who want a Japanese cover, because it's a Japanese comic, and those who want an English cover, because it's the English Wikipedia). —Quasirandom (talk) 14:56, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
sorry, it was just a suggestion because ADV doesn't publish Yotsuba&! anymore. —SupaPhly (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 16:10, 8 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]
No problem. Cookie for you ;) --KrebMarkt 16:47, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Possible New Section for the Article

I don't know how to properly cite sources, nor do I care to learn how to do this, but I think that somebody should piece together a segment on the history of Yotsuba being used as the mascot for a 404 error on 4chan.org. --71.74.228.230 (talk) 06:37, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yo,
Issue is that we failed again and again to prove it. Not that we are unaware of that fact. If we eventually found a reliable & credible source for that fact it will likely be added in the recognition & awards part of the article. Thanks. --KrebMarkt 07:14, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is mentioned on the character article Yotsuba Koiwai. It doesn't have to be repeated here. David Bailey (talk) 07:47, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for correcting me. Not enough coffee this early in the morning. --KrebMarkt 08:19, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Video games

Anyone have any references with release dates for the video games? —Quasirandom (talk) 15:40, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

After finding not a single clue and considering the Ip edit pattern especially diff 3 1 2 3 4, i suggest it's a piece of hoax and should be deleted as such. --KrebMarkt 16:04, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Searching Bandai's jp website for よつば finds nothing related to Yotsuba&!. Yup -- we've got a hoax here. Deleting now. —Quasirandom (talk) 17:14, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fuka versus Fuuka

Given the Yen editions are way outselling the ADV ones, at least for new volumes, a reasonable argument can be made that Fuuka is becoming the more commonly recognized romanization of Miss Wind-Scent's name. Thus some of the recent changes to the article. Time to change the mentions to Fuuka (with a mention of Fuka as alternate spelling in her character description)? Discuss. —Quasirandom (talk) 17:33, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
