"Lipstick" is the third single released by Irish pop duo Jedward. It is the first song released from their untitled second studio album. The song also represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany. "Lipstick" was selected on 11 February 2011, following the performance of five songs on the Irish national selection heat.[1][2] A digital release of the single was made available the following day,[1] with a physical release of the single appearing on 28 February.[3] The song was performed live in the second half of the second Eurovision semi-final on 12 May.[4] Jedward qualified for the final, which took place on 14 May. They performed in sixth position on the night and finished 8th out of the 25 competing countries, giving Ireland its best result in eleven years. They received 12 points from the United Kingdom, Denmark & Sweden. In Australia's separate TV voting it was the most popular song.[5]
Background
The song was written for the duo by collaborators Lars Jensen and Martin Larsson, with the help of JLS lyricist Dan Priddy. The song was written especially for the duo[1], and was recorded during December 2010 and January 2011. The song does not appear on Jedward's debut album, but is expected to be the first single from their currently untitled second studio album.[1] The song is notable for being the duo's first original song, as their debut album consisted entirely of cover songs and medleys. The duo performed the song on The Late Late Show following their Eurovision victory, on 12 February 2011.[1][2][6]
Critical reception
Nick Levene of Digital Spy gave the song three out of five stars: "That's right, the Brothers Grimes can now update a CV that already boasts a No.1 single and album at home, a Vorderman-esque portfolio of advertising contracts and their very own ITV2 documentary… with the words: "Ireland's Official Eurovision Entry, 2011." Suddenly Dunc 'n' chums look pretty plum, eh? Of course, representing one's nation at said Song Contest does necessitate steering one's larynx within the general vicinity of an original song - gasp! - albeit one without an Irishman among its trio of co-writers. Produced by Danish production house Deekay, 'Lipstick' is a dayglo wad of electroglammy bubblegum for the Nick Jr. contingent - given extra stickiness by Jedward vocals which bring to mind hiccupy new waver Lene Lovich. Pop gold? Hell no, but if Uncle Louis [Walsh] forks out for a Brian Friedman Stage Production Special, who knows what could happen?".[7] Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan claimed the song was 'catchy' and 'fantastic', and tipped the duo to win Eurovision.[8] ===Britains Got Talent=== On the 3 June fifth semi-final of Britains Got Talent, Jedward invaded the stage of the already bad Antonio Popeye's performance. However, this was widely panned on Twitter because they didnt look right belting out "she's got her lipstick on , here i come, da da dum" while he bulged his eyes.
Chart performance
"Lipstick" debuted at number-two in the Irish Singles Chart, on 13 February, only after Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"[9] and debuted at number 82 in the UK in the week of their Eurovision performance it has since risen to number 40. The song also went straight to the top of the German iTunes chart after the Eurovision and entered at number four in German Download Chart.
Since their Eurovision final performance, the song has finally gone to #1 in Ireland.
