Vélez or Velez is a surname of Spanish or Portuguese origin. It is of uncertain derivation, though scholars have suggested that it is a patronym from the personal name "Vela," which itself is derived from the Basque word bela or vela, both of which mean raven.[3] Alternatively, it is possible that nameholders may be of Roman origin, and that the surname descends from the Latin word vigilia. This was used as a description for a watchman, one who kept vigilant.[4]

Family researchers maintain that the surname was first found in Cantabria, although there are various places scattered throughout the south, especially in Andalusia, called Vélez.[5]
