Uliastai
Uliastai (Template:Lang-mn) is a city in Mongolia. It is located in the western part of the country, 1,115 kilometers from the capital Ulan Bator. Uliastai is the capital of Zavkhan Province and was the 10th most populous city in the country with a population of 24,276 (2000 census), now this city has 16,240 population (2006 est.[1]) and is at 16th position.
Uliastai city has sum (district) status and forms an enclave within the surrounding Aldarkhaan sum.
As late as the early 20th century Uliastai was an important center of caravan trade. It was connected by camel caravan routes with Urga (now Ulan Bator) in the east, Khovd in the west, Barkol and other points in Xinjiang in the southwest, and Hohhot in the southeast.[2]
During the Qing rule of Outer Mongolia, Uliastai was the office of Governor general of Outer Mongolia.
Transportation
The old Uliastai Airport has two unpaved runways and is located close to the city. Since 2002, the Donoi Airport (or "New Uliastai Airport") with one unpaved runway is located about 25 km west of the city and gets served by regular flights from and to Ulan Bator.
Climate
Uliastai experiences a subarctic (Köppen Dwc) with long, dry, very cold winters and short, warm summers.
