Gul (pronounced [ˈɣul]) is a family name or patronymic, particularly of Muslim people in Central and South Asia. It is also used as a given name for males and females.

The word gul in Persian[1] and Turkic languages means rose.

Gul is also an abbreviation used in the medieval and early modern periods for William (derived from Guillaume), for example in the signature "Gul: Ebor" for William Dawes, Archbishop of York.[2]
