Mevlüt Erdinç (born 25 February 1987) is a Turkish footballer. He currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain as a striker. He signed in the 2009 summer transfer window from FC Sochaux,[2] and is a Turkish and a French citizen. His surname is commonly spelt Erding by the French media. In January 2010 he received a medal of honour from his town of birth, Saint-Claude.[3]

Early life

Erdinç is the youngest of eight children. His parents emigrated from Yozgat, Turkey to France in 1973.[4]

Club career

Sochaux

Erdinç was promoted from Sochaux's academy to the first-team squad in the 2005–06 Ligue 1 season, scoring a last-minute goal on his debut to gift his side a 1–0 victory away at AC Ajaccio. Despite early promise, it wasn't until the 2007–08 season that he was finally able to hold down a first team place – becoming the club's top-scorer with 11 goals in 28 appearances.

He scored in the 1–0 win against Grenoble on the final day of the 2008–09 season. Sochaux needed at least a point in order to confirm their top flight status in Ligue 1 for next season. He was their leading goal scorer for the 2008–09 season with 12 goals.

Paris Saint-Germain

Mevlut signed for Paris Saint-Germain on 28 June 2009 on a four year contract,[5] for a reported €9 million.[6] Having previously scored 11 goals in the league for the past two seasons for relegation-threatened Sochaux, there was a lot of speculation about his future prior to the move to PSG. Aston Villa, Fulham Newcastle United and Wigan reportedly showing an interest in May 2009,[7] as well as other French sides Bordeaux and Lyon[8]

He scored his first goal for PSG in a pre-season friendly match away to Fiorentina in Italy, on 29 July 2009 in a game which PSG won 3–0.[9][10] He also played against Rangers F.C. in the Emirates Cup on 1 August 2009 but failed to get on the score sheet.[11]

He scored his first League goal for PSG in the second week of Ligue 1 in PSG's 3–1 win at home to Le Mans.[12][13] In his first month playing for PSG, he was selected as Ligue 1 Player of the Month in August by 31% of fans who voted on the official website.[14] A foot injury in late October 2009 saw him ruled out of action for approximately four weeks, but nonetheless had still managed to score six league goals in 11 games by December.

In March 2010 he scored his first hattrick for PSG in a 4–1 home win against his previous club FC Sochaux.[15][16] He was the PSG top scorer in the 2009–10 season and third-placed in the overall league scoring charts, having scored 15 goals in the league and 19 in all games. Erdinç was voted PSG's player of the year for the 2009-10 season.

International career

He has dual-nationality and was thus eligible for both Turkish and French national teams, before gaining his first senior international cap for Turkey on 26 March 2008, in a 2–2 draw with Belarus.

Euro 2008

On 10 May 2008, Fatih Terim announced Erdinç's inclusion in Turkey's 23-man squad for Euro 2008. He started in the first eleven against Turkey's first opponent Portugal, however he was substituted after the first half. Also, he came on as a second-half substitute in the semi-final against Germany.
