Maru can refer to

  • The Maru language, one of several languages spoken among the Kachin people in Myanmar/Burma and China.
  • The Japanese name for a circle, which is used to mean "correct"; the opposite of batsu. The end-of-sentence fullstop '' is also called maru. Maru also means zero '0' as in example 201: nii maru ichi
  • Maru (丸) is a Japanese bailey (castle wall). See kuruwa.
  • Maru is a popular name for Japanese pets, mainly cats.[citation needed].
    • Maru (cat) (まる, Japanese: circle or round), a particular cat in Japan that has become an Internet celebrity

    • Eureka Maru, a fictional starship from the television show Andromeda.
    • Hakudo Maru, the spirit in Japanese mythology who taught humans how to make ships.
    • Kobayashi Maru, a training exercise at the Starfleet Academy in the motion picture Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
    • Komagata Maru, a Japanese steam liner carrying 376 passengers from Punjab, India, that was not allowed to land in Vancouver, Canada, in 1914, and had to return to India.
    • Montevideo Maru, a Japanese auxiliary ship that was sunk in World War II, resulting in the drowning of a large number of Australian prisoners of war and civilians being transported from Rabaul.
    • Nisshin Maru, a Japanese whaling ship.
    • Piper Maru:
      • The name of a ship that experiences time shifts in Piper Maru, episode 3x15 of The X-Files.
      • The name of an icebreaker in the Alien vs. Predator film.
  • Maru is a common nickname in Spanish-speaking countries. It is a common nickname for Maria Eugenia and Maruja.
