The Omani rial (ISO 4217 code OMR) is the official currency of Oman. It is divided into 1000 baisa (baiza).
The Omani rial was introduced to replace Saidi rial at par in 1973. The name was changed due to the regime change in 1970 and the subsequent change of the country's name. The Saidi rial had been introduced in 1970 to replace the Gulf rupee at a rate of 13 1/3 rupees = 1 rial. Earlier rial coins issued in Oman were equivalent to the Maria Theresa Thaler.
As of January 18, 2005, one Omani Rial was worth 2.59067 United States dollars. It is the fourth highest valued currency after the Kuwaiti Dinar, Maltese Lira, and the Bahraini dinar.
