Saguaro High School is a former A+ and Blue Ribbon Schools Program certified high schools of the Scottsdale Unified School District in Scottsdale, Arizona.[2][3] Saguaro was opened in 1966. It is a AIA Div. 3 School.

Beginning in 2006, Saguaro underwent massive renovation in response to the swelling student population (mostly caused by the huge inflow of families to North Scottsdale) and aging facilities. The school's boundaries are still oddly-shaped, with a pocket of North Scottsdale students carved out of what was once the Desert Mountain High School boundary zone due to massive overcrowding of the latter.

The Area

Saguaro is located near the crossroad of Hayden Road and McDonald Road, two blocks from the 101 Freeway funneling into North Scottsdale. It is located in what is colloquially known as Central Scottsdale, in close proximity to Old Town Scottsdale and the Fashion Square Mall. The student body is economically diverse, hailing anywhere from low income to extremely wealthy families. Most students from Saguaro go to Arizona State University, University of Arizona or Scottsdale Community College. Others also choose to go out of state to other universities or community college.

Football

Saguaro's varsity football program have won the state championship title five times(1995, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010).

They won their first State Championship in 1995 over Glendale Ironwood by a score of 42-7. Led by future NFL standout Mike Brown, the Sabercats went from having one of the worst records in their division in '94, to having the best in '95.

After failing to reach the championship game for the next 9 years, Saguaro came back to win three state championships in a row beginning in 2006 with wins over Tucson Sabino [4], Tucson Canyon del Oro in '07 (23-21) and finally, their hometown and longest known rival, Scottsdale's Chaparral High School in '08 with a dominating score of 38-0.

During these years, the Saguaro football team went to an astounding record of 37 wins and no losses. The winning streak was finally snapped in 2009 by Tucson's Canyon Del Oro High School and a new rivalry was born.

2010 saw the Sabercats add yet another state championship to their trophy case. On December 4, 2010, the football team went on to avenge their loss the previous season by defeating Canyon Del Oro by a score of 41-34. The victory brought Saguaro their fifth state championship in Division 1 4A football and their fourth title in five years.

The Sabercats are undefeated in State Championship games, with a record of 5-0.

Other Athletics

The varsity baseball program is two time State Champions (1992 and 2010). The 1992 team won the school's first ever State Championship in Baseball by a score of 5-1 over Shadow Mountain High School. In 2010 they defeated Catalina Foothills 15-5 for their second State Championship. Notable athletes who have played for Saguaro's varsity baseball program include Chicago Bears safety Mike Brown, All-State first baseman and home-run specialist Jim Clark, Anthony Sulceski (regarded as one of the greatest defensive catchers in the history of Arizona high school baseball) and the school's all-time winningest pitcher Michael "Mike" Branam.

The Varsity Boys' Basketball program are 3 time State Champions (1990, 1996, and 2004). The first ever State Championship in 1990 was won by a score of 88-78 over Corona del Sol. The second State Championship in 1996 was won by a score of 50-43 over Prescott, both years coached by Mike Cady and the third State Championship in 2004 was won by a score of 62-54 over Tempe McClintock, coached by Bob Larue.

The SHS Varsity Boy's Golf and Girl's Golf programs have combined for four State Championships (Boy's 1977 and 1990, Girl's 1997 and 1998).

The Girl's Swim and Dive program are one time State Champions (1971) .

Science Department

Saguaro's Science Olympiad teams consistently score in the top two schools at the Arizona State Science Olympiad competition, a testimony to the school's rigorous science program. The school also has an excellent record at the statewide Chemistry Challenge at Northern Arizona University.[citation needed]

Performing arts

Saguaro High School has five disciplines in its performing arts department: orchestra, band, dance, theater, and choir.

Choir

There are five choirs, including the mixed choir Voices of Saguaro which has attended multiple national competitions. Saguaro High’s concert choir, Voices of Saguaro has won seven consecutive first place awards in the concert choir division at various Heritage festivals throughout the country. The group made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2005, performing the Mozart Requiem. Most recently the group was selected from thousands of applicants to perform the National Anthem in Boston's Fenway Park in April 2011 for the Yankees vs. Red Sox game.

The Advanced Vocal Ensemble has performed in concert twice with Josh Groban and with Jonathan Cain of the rock band Journey at Alice Cooper’s Christmas Pudding show. All Saguaro High School Choirs are currently under the direction of Gaylin Tutnick, who has taught Vocal Music, Music Appreciation and The History of Rock and Roll for sixteen years at Saguaro High School. Under her direction, the Vocal Music program has grown to 175 students in four choirs. She was honored in 2000 with the Walmart Teacher of the Year Award for the City of Scottsdale, and is a recipient of the O.M. Hartsell Award for excellence in teaching by the Arizona Music Educator’s Assn. She was also awarded the 2004 ScottsdaleCharrosHigh School Educator of the Year Award for the ScottsdaleUnifiedSchool District. Most recently, Mrs. Tutnick was recognized as a Distinguished Educator by the Arizona Flynn Foundation in May of 2008.

The choir program at Saguaro High School is enormously successful, they show off student talents by putting on a "Coffee House" every year during the fall, in which students audition to perform songs in front of an audience in the Saguaro High School auditorium. This show has grown to be extremely successful over the years and has garnered the attention of parents and students alike. Every other year the Saguaro High School choir program put on a show entitled "Century of Song," this show is also very popular amongst parents and the student body.

Band

The band department boasts many excellent ensembles. They have a very strong wind ensemble throughout the year, a marching band in the fall and winter, a jazz band in the winter and spring, and a percussion ensemble in the winter and fall also.

The marching band is by far the most popular and visible group of them all. They go to all the football games home and away, participate in local and out-of-state parades, and are used as pep bands for the boys and girls basketball varsity games. They have always had a tradition of excellence, making the state marching competition every year except for the 2008-2009 season. In the 2010-2011 season, the band revived a classic marching band show, Carmina Burana and received a Superior rating at the State Marching Festival. This lead them to the State Marching Band Championship and was crowned one of the top ten bands in the state of Arizona.

Clubs

The extracurricular activities in the school include a number of clubs, such as the Art Club, the Environmental Club, the International Club, the French Club, the Sign Language Club, and the Think Tank, .
