Hollyoaks is a British soap opera set in and around the fictional Chester suburb of the same name and filmed mainly at the Mersey Television studios in nearby Liverpool. Hollyoaks was originally devised by Phil Redmond, who also devised shows such as Brookside and Grange Hill.

Hollyoaks began in 1995. The soap is centred around a former 1950s technical college which is now a college of higher education called Hollyoaks Community College (often mistaken for the real-life University of Chester) with the characters and main target audience generally being in their late teens or early twenties. Produced by Mersey Television, the show currently broadcasts at 6:30pm every weekday on Channel 4 with an omnibus edition on Sundays. The show also features occasional late-night spin-off editions, which feature more dramatic or controversial plotlines; these generally do fit into the Hollyoaks universe, and are considered canon. Channel 4's Welsh equivalent, S4C, broadcasts the Sunday omnibus only. Hollyoaks is also shown in countries such as Canada on the BBC Kids channel. The programme is known for launching the careers of Will Mellor, Jodi Albert, Gary Lucy, Elize Du Toit, Jeremy Edwards and James Redmond.

Hollyoaks has received numerous awards over the years and raised awareness of issues such as teen pregnancy, abortion and male rape. Also it has recently been focusing on major concerns such as date rape. However, some people do not consider the show to be a serious drama when compared with the bigger soaps such as Eastenders and Coronation Street, partly due to its reputation for hiring numerous attractive, blonde, ratings-grabbing actresses.

Current characters

Burton Family

  • Liz Burton (formerly Taylor) - Andree Bernard

Liz is the archetypal overwrought mother of teenagers and spends her life trying to maintain the peace between her offspring, whose father committed suicide.

She had a difficult relationship with stepdaughter Darlene, made worse when Darlene found out that her brother Ali had (accidentally) stabbed school bully Stephen "Macki" Mackintosh, but told everybody she suspected Liz's son Justin. Darlene changed her story in court, which contributed towards Justin being acquitted of killing Macki. Liz was grateful to Darlene for this. After Justin returned home, Liz chucked Richard out for having an affair with a colleague but said Darlene could stay with them.

Liz has recently decided that her family must move away from Hollyoaks, to start afresh. However, most of her children are unwilling. Darlene has been kicked out, Sophie has said she doesn't want to leave and Justin hasn't said anything to Liz yet but Becca begged him to stay.

Her name is a reference to actress Elizabeth Taylor's marriages to actor Richard Burton.

A troubled teen, Justin began misbehaving and smoking cannabis after his father's death. He constantly hurt his family and hid behind Liz, who felt obliged to support him. However, after pushing step-sister Darlene through a plate glass window, Liz sent Justin off to boot camp.

Since then, he has calmed considerably, completed his GCSEs at Hollyoaks Comprehensive, and recently reconciled with Darlene and Ali, becoming fast friends with his step-siblings. He was framed by Macki for blowing up the local high school but later proved his innocence, although Macki was not identified as the culprit. He and step-brother Ali were bullied by Macki and his gang which dramatically ended with Ali stabbing Macki before being knocked down by a car and killed.

In his haste to cover up for his step-brother, Justin led the police to believe it was he who had stabbed Macki and he was arrested for murder. He was bullied on remand in youth detention and escaped whilst on a trip to the dentist. He spent a month on the run but was eventually caught when the police followed his sister Mel as she brought him provisions. Justin was then back in prison awaiting trial. He would be visited in secret by Becca Dean, his teacher. Justin was found not guilty of murder and returned home.

He had a relationship with Nicole Owen, whom he dumped in order to pursue Becca. Becca confronted him about his treatment of Nicole and he and Becca ended up sleeping together. Becca was worried he would tell her husband Jake Dean.

Justin is the same age as Becca's sister Nancy, with whom he had a brief relationship to make Becca jealous, when Justin informed Becca he was leaving, she begged him to stay in Hollyoaks. He is now having an affair with her.

  • Sophie Burton - Connie Powney

Justin's older sister Sophie has had to cope with the suicide of her father and the death of her step-brother Ali, plus breakup of her mother Liz from her stepfather Richard. Sophie has a twin sister, Mel, and her step-sister, Darlene, Richard's daughter, still lived with the family until recently.

Although identical twins, Mel and Sophie are polar opposites; Sophie is quiet and introverted and often gets annoyed by her siblings' behaviour and lack of consideration for her needs.

Sophie and Mel were both drugged with GHB by Andy Holt. Mel was raped, although Sophie escaped this.

Sophie has started a relationship with Sam Owen. He confessed his part in the rapes and she tricked him into turning himself in, however, Sophie broke down when she was home alone after Sam was sentanced to a minimum of 25 years in prison for his part in the rapes. Presumably, this is because she was still in love with him and wanted him to pay for his crimes, not take his life away.

  • Melanie Burton - Cassie Powney

Sophie's twin sister Mel is outgoing and speaks her mind. She and Sophie manage to get along despite irritating each other a lot of the time, and she shares her twin's ire at the lack of respect they get from the rest of the family.

Mel has recently had alcohol problems but got her act together following some unprotected sex when she was drunk which left her fearing she had an STI. Andy Holt raped Mel after drugging her and her sister Sophie, which had a catastrophic effect on Mel, who turned to alcohol again to try to escape from her problems. Mel was hospitalised after falling into an alcohol-related coma on New Year's Eve 2005, which led Liz to discover that she had been raped.

In the late night spin-off series Hollyoaks: Back from the dead, Mel tracked down Andy to the warehouse where he was holding Russ, Sam and Nicole hostage. She drugged him with GHB and told him he would have to pay for his crimes. When she was on the phone to the police Andy tried to escape; he ran into a darkened room where Mel found him impaled on a metal spike (he had run into it).and she is have a on and off thing with ob

Dean-Osborne Family

  • Frankie Osborne (formerly Dean) - Helen Pearson

Impulsive and slightly flaky, Frankie was hit hard by the departure of her husband Johnno, who left her to marry his pregnant 19 year old girlfriend. She is now married to Jack Osborne and is now living there after being evicted from her home for failing to pay the bills. Frankie is the mother of Jake, Debbie, Steph and Craig Dean.

  • Jack Osborne - Jimmy McKenna

The proprietor of The Dog In The Pond public house, twice married Jack is typically a no-nonsense bloke who often clashes with his son Darren over his ill thought out plans and impulsive behaviour. Currently he is also providing a home for the Deans after their eviction from their home, He was sceptical at first. He is now married to Frankie and are both enjoying a happy relationship.

  • Darren Osborne - Ashley Taylor Dawson

Very impulsive and not blessed with a lot of forethought, Darren has a tendency to make enemies due to his headstrong nature and his arrogance. Darren also feels constantly hard done by and seeks to prove himself through get rich quick schemes and forcibly asserting his independence in order to try and win Jack's approval.

  • Craig Dean - Guy Burnet

Fiercely protective of his family and friends since he was left devastated by the knowledge that his father was having an illicit affair. Craig is intelligent and crafty and often willing to turn his hand to scams and manipulation to get his way. He has recently left a relationship with Darlene Taylor after feeling as if she wasn't fair on him and making up untrue claims about his family making passes on her- Her cause wasn't exactly helped by having Craig walk in on her having sex with Darren. His birthday is June 10.

  • Jake Dean - Kevin Sacre

Frankie and Johnno's eldest child, Jake was the reliable, sensible one in the family who had to constantly bail out his troublesome siblings and more often his money spending parents. This included taking on mortgages and got him a bad name with the bank when his parents managed to lapse the agreement and not pay their share. Following Ben Davies' wedding to Izzy Jake shared a kiss with Becca who he had been trying to impress all night. Jake pursued Becca and was delighted when she became his girlfriend. Despite the fact he obviously worshipped Becca he indulged in an affair with Lisa Hunter and was torn over what to do for the best. He ended the affair and planned to propose to Becca. This went wrong and the guilt of having cheated on the woman he loved got too much and rather than proposing he confessed to the affair. Becca was heartbroken and Jake begged her to forgive him but after discovering he had not only cheated on her but had also given her an STD she broke up with him for good.

Jake pined for Becca, and after finally getting close to her again he decided to keep it that way and retreived the ring he had given her and proposed in a knight's outfit on a white horse ready to sweep Becca off her feet. Although the proposal went slightly wrong Jake was over the moon when Becca accepted and the two were reconciled. They married in a double ceremony with Jake's mum Frankie also marrying Jack Osborne. Becca had doubts on the wedding day and seriously thought of caling the whole thing off, but married him anyway after a heart to heart with her father.

Jake isusually hard working, caring and honest, he has a habit of acting without thinking things through. This is notable in his affair with Lisa whilst he was going out with Becca (to whom he is now totally devoted), which jeopardised their relationship, but they are now married and he is determined to do the right thing by her no matter what it takes. They are currently trying for a baby and Jake is extremely keen and is oblivious to Becca's true feelings on the matter and how unhappy and trapped she feels in their relationship.

Caring, emotional and slightly naïve, Becca is also very clumsy. She is married to Jake and finishing her final year studying teacher training. Her and Jake have experienced tension in their relationship, most recently after Jake found out she had been visiting ex-student Justin, who had an unrequited crush on her, in prison and most notably when Jake had an affair with Lisa Hunter which resulted in him passing on an STD. Although the affair ended when Jake realised he was madly in love with Becca, the guilt proved to much and his first marriage proposal bacame a confession. The two broke up but Jke was determined to win Becca back and did so with a knight in shining armour style proposal in the village. The two married although Becca still feared she was making a mistake up until she said 'i do'. Becca is also known as being somewhat of a pushover and struggles to say "no" to anyone in trouble even if it means she puts herself in a difficult position, which it usually does.

The marriage suffered problems almost amediately, as Becca feared she had made a mistake and Jake's possessive behaviour increased when she visited her pupil Justin in prison after being pressurised by his sisters. Jake also had money troubles following his parents disasterous mortgage and felt he had let Becca down, while Becca felt her marriage was a mistake and felt trapped and alone.

On Christmas Eve 2005 she went to Justin's house and admitted she was jealous when she found out he had slept with Nicole (even though it wasn't true) and this lead to a passionate kiss. The next day she went back after spending most of Christmas Day playing happy families with the Deans. They slept together and she later told him it was a mistake even though it is quite obvious she still has feelings for him. (In an interview Ali Bastian stated that Becca was "passionately in love" with Justin).

Becca told Jake that it would be a good idea for them to start a family together, which she would later regret as right now having babies with Jake is the last thing on her mind, other concerns are much more important to her. She told Mandy she had had an affair with a teacher, Mandy later found out the true identity of her teenage lover. When Justin told her he was leaving, she begged him to stay. She later claimed this was from an academic viewpoint only. The affair with Justin started up again on Valentines day. She is now feeling torn between two men who both love her desperately but in different ways. The shock news of her beloved father's death has left her feeling more confused and distraught than ever.

  • Steph Dean - Carly Stenson

Flighty and extremely extrovert, Steph thinks very highly of herself and her own abilities. She tends to consider herself better than her peers and sometimes comes across as selfish, though she does try to help with other people's problems. This, however, usually leads to her simply annoying those who she talks to, as she will typically lecture them in a superior manner or bully them into doing something that she wants to do. Steph was the only girl to survive an attack by serial killer Toby Mills. She has epilepsy as a result of the attack.

Steph has acted in a television commercial for rugs and, like her older sister Debbie, enjoys singing. Although she complains about them, she maintains a close relationship with most of her family, the only exception being her father Johnno, who impregnated and ran off with a nineteen-year-old and her baby half-brother, whom she has never met. Steph is currently going out with tidy, organised Cameron Clarke, much to everybody's amusement as the two are completely opposites. Cameron suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and despite her fickle nature, Steph has stuck by him and is trying to understand his difficulties.
