The 2012 Allstate BCS Championship Game is a postseason college football bowl game between the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide, scheduled to be the final college football game to determine the national champion of the 2011 NCAA Division I FBS football season on Monday, January 9, 2012, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game is part of the 2011–2012 Bowl Championship Series of the 2011 NCAA Division I FBS football season and will be the concluding game of the season for both teams. The game, the 6th edition of the BCS National Championship Game, will be televised in the United States on ESPN, with a simulcast on both ESPN3.com and ESPN 3D, at 8:30 p.m. US EST.

LSU was selected to participate in the BCS National Championship Game after a 13-0 regular season that culminated with a 42–10 win over the University of Georgia in the 2011 SEC Championship Game. Alabama was picked as the other half of the matchup following an 11–1 campaign, with their only loss coming against LSU during the regular season. Over the following weeks, a series of upsets resulted in the Crimson Tide receiving a No. 2 ranking in the final BCS Poll to qualify for the championship game. The selection of Alabama was controversial, and decried by writers such as Rick Reilly, and fans alike who claimed other opponents, most prominently the Oklahoma State Cowboys, were more deserving of a spot in the game.

This game will be the first time in the 14 year history of the BCS that the National Championship Game has featured two teams from the same conference, let alone the same division, as well as the first time it features teams who have already met in the regular season (Florida defeated Florida State 52-20 for the national title in the 1997 Sugar Bowl prior to the current BCS format). As a result, the SEC's championship streak will be extended to six straight seasons. The two teams have met 75 times, with the Tide leading the Tigers in the series 45-25-5. In the last four meetings, each team won two games, including a 27-21 overtime victory in 2008 and a 24-15 win in 2009 for Alabama.
