The Bourne Legacy is an upcoming 2012 American action thriller spy film based on the novel of the same name written by author Eric Van Lustbader. The film will be the fourth installment in the eponymous Bourne film series, which are all based on the Jason Bourne novels created by Robert Ludlum and Eric Van Lustbader. The story sets off after the conclusion of The Bourne Ultimatum with Tony Gilroy as the director, screenwriter of the first three films. Matt Damon, star of the first three films, will not return for this film. Damon has not ruled out starring in any future films as long as Paul Greengrass, who directed the last two films, returns.

Plot

The story resumes after the conclusion of The Bourne Ultimatum, as a new cast of characters grapple with the consequences of Jason's actions.[1]

Cast

  • Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross/Kenneth Gidson, an agent of Operation Outcome, described as "Treadstone, [but] without the inconsistency".
  • Rachel Weisz as Stephanie Snyder, one the film's two main protagonists.
  • Edward Norton as Byer, the film's antagonist.
  • Joan Allen, reprising her role as Pam Landy, Deputy Director of the CIA.
  • David Strathairn, reprising his role as Noah Vosen, the former director of Operation Blackbriar.
  • Albert Finney, reprising his role as Dr. Albert Hirsch, the doctor responsible for the creation of Treadstone operatives.
  • Scott Glenn, reprising his role as Ezra Kramer, Director of the CIA
  • David Asmar, introduced as the new role of Evan Pines, the young criminal

The cast also includes Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac.

Production

George Nolfi, who co-wrote the screenplay for the Bourne Ultimatum film, was to write the screenplay for a fourth film, as always tacitly related to the novels by Robert Ludlum. Matt Damon was also attached to the project from the start.[2] Julia Stiles as well as Joan Allen were asked to join the project at this time. Then this project was abruptly cancelled. When asked whether a fourth film in the franchise would get made at all, Damon said, "We can't keep going forever... we may come back and shoot some other time." Paul Greengrass was slated to return as director; however, on November 30, 2009, he said he wasn't interested in directing,[3] and Matt Damon has since said that he will not make the film without Greengrass.[4]

On June 9, 2010, it was announced that Tony Gilroy would write The Bourne Legacy[5] and on October 11, 2010 Gilroy was confirmed as the director of the film, and that Jason Bourne would not be in The Bourne Legacy[6] although it retains the name Bourne as to identify it as a continuity to the franchise. The film will not take place in a new canon; it will not be a reboot or prequel in any way, but more likely a "sidequel" or full spin-off with a new character in the mold of Bourne dealing with the ramifications of the Treadstone conspiracy.

Filming began on January 11, 2012 in Manila, Philippines[7] with a few short scenes filmed in New York and El Nido, Palawan. Before filming began, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority releases a traffic advisory informing motorists about the road closures due to filming.[8] Because of the heavy traffic caused by the filming,[9] citizens received benefits from the film,[7] such as house renovation and cash incentives, aside from the wages earned by film extras.

The first trailer was released on February 9, 2012, confirming the film's August release date. [10]
