Hyperaccumulators:Perchlorate

Would anyone be willing to look at perchlorate as hyperaccumulator in the green leafy vegetation that typically makes up the salad bowls of America. A study by the FDA (item 9) http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/clo4qa.html

Has FDA found perchlorate in lettuce?

Lettuce samples were collected at the grower or packing shed. For sample analysis, outermost leaves of each lettuce head were removed, similar to the actions typically taken by a consumer prior to consumption. Among 128 lettuce samples tested, perchlorate levels ranging from levels below the limit of quantitation to 71.6 ppb (part per billion), with a mean of 7.76 ppb, were found in iceberg lettuce; levels of 1.00 to 27.4 ppb, with a mean of 10.7 ppb, were found in green leaf lettuce; levels below the limit of quantitation to 52.0 ppb, with a mean of 11.6 ppb, were found in red leaf lettuce; and levels below the limit of quantitation to 129 ppb, with a mean of 11.9 ppb, were found in romaine lettuce.

EWG is recommending a 0.5 ppb public health goal for drinking water and the levels found in this study are significantly higher than what would be acceptable in water.

Perchlorate attacks the thyroid. http://www.ewg.org/reports/thyroidthreat/execsumm.php

The risk groups of concern are woman and children, pregnant women, and specifically pregnant vegetarian women. They are at higher risk as they tend to eat non commercial foods and therefore have a lower sodium uptake. This also translates to a lower iodine uptake and potential thyroid issues. This is a developing story that will likely become big in the next couple years. The source of the perchlorate in the soil is likely a Chilean guano based fertilizer (over 39 million tones were imported since 1939) that became the top soil in the Salinas and Imperial valleys where the bulk of the salad of America is grown.

If anyone has any info or has a university contact that would be willing to look into this I'd appreciate a comment line.

phytoremediation:salts

Have there been any studies involving phytoremediation of salt/saline from soils and/or saltwater? I am interested in conducting such a study and i have been unable to find any previous studies thus far. please post anything helpful in response. thank you.

Hyperaccumulators

Hyperaccumulators I am interested in learning more about plants as hyperaccumulators for removing metals and other toxins from soils. How does this work- does the plant hold the metal/toxin in the root? in the leaf? And once in the plant- what does one do with the plant which now has the toxin in it? And what is the make-up of some plants which make them work for some metal removals, while other plants will not work? Lastly- how does one find a list of plants which have successfully removed spefic metals or other toxins? Thanks Stevie Famulari

Using phytorem in architectural landscape

This is the biography that Ms Famulari sent me (she the one who provided the above table of hyperaccumulators). I have asked her to present her work for wiki coz I have never heard of anyone using phytorem in his/her teaching landscape archi, and I think that this is to be highly encouraged. Well aware that this is not the page for it, and that it should have its own page, with links to this here article plus likely a few others from the environment portal. I haven't got a clue how to navigate it, and busy cleaning up the rest of this page - it may take quite a while. If someone passing by is willing to help, the quickest thing for that is to create a new page, stick that bio on it or in the discussion page, and (the longest for me to find out how and where to link) put links from that new page to other relevant pages. Those whould be such as: Landscape archi, this one here phytorem (but I can do that one since I know how it's called), and any other relevant page you can think of. Most appreciated, thank you.

ARTIST’S BIO...

A native New Yorker, Stevie Famulari moved to New Mexico from California, and continues to travel nationally. Stevie’s business’ LIVINGSCAPES, Green Responses originated in New York and was further developed in California and New Mexico. Stevie creates LivingScapes and Environmental Art- landscapes, indoor and outdoor greening, green murals, ephemeral fashions, building fronts & windows, sculptures, and design events nationally. Stevie’s Earthworks range from temporary to long term. In her artwork, Stevie strives to illustrate a site’s energy, stories, and changes through a time period. Her art inspires others to appreciate the amazement, stories, and fun of landscapes with ephemeral, changing and long-term designs.

Her recent LivingScapes explore Phytoremediation in both Outdoor and Indoor spaces. This includes the qualities of sense, site, color, texture, smell, and use of indoor vs. outdoor space. Stevie’s Earthworks exploring this topic include ‘Innerscapes 5’, ‘Innerscapes 4’, ‘Moss Green’, ‘Green Mondrian’, ‘Spiraling Staircase of Plants’, and ‘Revealing and Concealing Narratives’. Her designs gray the lines between the indoor and outdoor worlds, while cleaning the site. In addition to her own works, Stevie returned to NYC in 2005 for 1 ½ months to work on Christo & Jeanne-Claude’s ‘The Gates’ as crew captain.

Stevie teaches and lectures about environmental art to adults and children. For example, she has been invited to guest teach and guest critic for courses in the undergraduate and graduate department of Landscape Architecture and Architecture at the University of New Mexico. Additionally, Stevie currently teaches Environmental Art, Plant Selection and Landscape Construction at Central New Mexico Community College (formerly TVI). Stevie received a B.F.A in photography at New York University (N.Y.U). The desire to use all of her senses (and to encourage others to do the same) led Stevie to environmental art and a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture with a concentration in Fine Arts-Sculpture from S.U.N.Y College of Environmental Science and Forestry & Syracuse University, respectively. She also received a Certificate in Pastry Arts from the School of Confectionary Arts in N.Y.C, and has taken coursework at the Center for Book Arts, Fashion Institute of Technology, and Long Island University.

Stevie’s clients and projects include public as well as private sites and events. Most recently, ‘Weaving LivingScapes’ her xeric design for Piedra Lumbre, Education & Visitor’s Center at Ghost Ranch includes elements for international visitors of all ages. Additionally, her work for Piedra Lumbre encompasses master planning for the multi-acre site, ADA paths, water features, brochure, and environmental art.

Questioning traditional landscape practices has been a large part of Stevie’s artwork. Revealing Landscape Narratives has been part of her practice for over 12 years. Understanding the ecological processes, using the community and individual stories of a site, and working with light, color, texture, scent, scale are part of the process she uses to create site-specific Earthworks. She is widely recognized for the interactive nature of her work as well as her inclusion of humor and environmentally friendly media that speak volumes about her environmental consciousness.

Stevie Famulari and LivingScapes have been featured in over 100 newspapers, magazines, books, television programs, radio programs, and other publications including:
