Brenda Strong has stated in an interview that the final season's mystery arc will reveal more secrets of the Young family, giving her character more screentime.[13]

This series also saw the women deal with covering up the murder of Alejandro Perez, Gabrielle's stepfather, from the season seven finale - including Susan feeling guilty, Gabrielle having to deal with Carlos's guilt turning to drinking, and Bree's struggle as Detective Vance becomes suspicious. The season also features the storyline involving Lynette's separation from Tom and the toll taken on her from the cover up, and Renee's relationship with new neighbor Ben.

Charles Mesure joined the cast as Ben Faulkner, a ruthless, self-made contractor who will find Renee Perry attractive.[26]

Andrea Parker will play Jane, a love interest for Tom Scavo, as a recurring cast member.[23] Miguel Ferrer will also play the recurring role of Andre Zeller, a part-time illustrator who clashes with Susan Delfino.[19] Scott Bakula is coming to Desperate Housewives to play Bree's lawyer.[14] Ashley Morris has joined the cast as Andrew's fiancée.[22] It's been confirmed that Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts will be guest starring as a wealthy woman whom Gabrielle begins to work for.[27]

Dana Delany and Christine Estabrook will be reprising their roles as Katherine Mayfair and Martha Huber in the series finale.[17][18]

Storylines

Susan Delfino

Susan struggles with her guilt more than the other women, breaking down at school when burying a dead hamster and committing minor crimes so that she can get the punishment she feels she deserves. She also has trouble keeping the secret from Mike but agrees to because she wants to protect him. Susan becomes close to Carlos as they discuss their guilt over the murder, leading Mike to suspect they are having an affair. To prove their innocence, the two confide in him about Alejandro's murder. Mike tries to help his wife accept that taking part in the cover-up will change her life and that she must deal with this. Susan also joins an art class run by artist Andre Zeller. Furious that the other women planned on moving the body without telling her, Susan releases her anger through her art in a painting that depicts the women standing over Alejandro's body. However, she becomes nervous when Felix the art critic wants to hang her picture in his gallery and her teacher Andre agrees to it behind her back. When Chuck attends the gallery opening and reveals how much he knows about the crime, Susan becomes furious with Bree again. Susan becomes nervous after talking to Chuck and tells Mike she wants to go away for a while, although Mike says that leaving will look suspicious. She decides to collect the money from Felix for her paintings she sold and when he hands over her cheque, he also offers her a job in New York. Susan tells Mike that she wants to take it as she doesn't feel the same way about Wisteria Lane anymore, but he tells her she is running from her problems and will not go with her. After discovering Chuck has been killed Susan realizes she does not need to leave, but instead intends to head to Alejandro's home to ensure his family is OK so she can relieve herself of guilt. Claudia, Alejandro's wife, confronts Susan over the comments she made to her daughter, thinking she is having an affair with her husband. She posts flyers all over the lane suggesting as such and when Gaby notices Susan taking them down and reveals that Alejandro also abused his new stepdaughter, she tells her to bring Claudia to her so she can reveal the truth about her past. Susan is excited to see Julie who is coming to visit but is shocked to discover she is six months pregnant. Julie has decided to give the baby up for adoption as the father doesn't want to be involved and she is finishing her PhD. Susan tries to convince her otherwise but finally agrees to support Julie after a conversation about how hard it was for her growing up with a single parent. After discovering that Porter is the father of Julie's baby Susan agrees to support him when he expresses the wish to raise the child alone rather than have her adopted. Julie tells her mother that she cannot forgive her for taking the decision away from her. Later they have a long resolving talk, when the loan shark shows up and shoots Mike in the chest, killing him almost instantly.

Lynette Scavo

Not only is Lynette suffering strain from the murder but she is also having a tough time with her separation from Tom. At first she is reluctant to tell the children, but after she has a one night stand with Tom, he decides to tell them. They then clash over Tom letting the children have whatever they want, making Lynette the bad person who always says "No". Lynette talks to Tom about booking couples therapy to try to heal their relationship. However, after Renee comments that Tom has been taking care of himself lately (dressing smartly and working out) and suspects he has been dating someone, Lynette becomes worried. She goes to a gym class with Renee to spy on the trainer she believes Tom is seeing, but realizes he is actually dating the woman's mother, Jane, leaving Lynette devastated. Terrified of what would happen to her children if she is caught by Chuck, Lynette confesses her secret to Tom just as he is about to leave for Paris with Jane. He decides not to go, leaving his relationship on the rocks, which leaves him furious with Lynette. Tom tells Bob Lynette's secret in case she should need a lawyer but realises they are safe when Chuck is killed. Tom spends the night with Lynette and the kids but after a discussion about Jane she tells him to go to Paris to see if she can make him happy. Lynette decides she wants to get back into dating and forces Renee to set her up with her hair stylist Frank, even though she is reluctant to do so. Frank admits his marriage ended becase his wife was so controlling and Lynette, seeing similarities, tries to defend his wife and ends up creating a '5 Year Plan' for him as well as insulting his current job. In retaliation he gives Renee a bad haircut and so she confronts Lynette, telling her that it was this behavior that led to Tom leaving. Lynette admits she knows this, but is worried that it is too late for her to be able to change. Frank agrees to give Lynette another chance but she ends up crying the first time they have sex. Lynette is convinced she has ruined her chance, but he returns and tells her he understands she is going through a difficult time and is prepared to go through it too because he really likes her. Porter and Preston move back in to Lynette's house after they are evicted, much to her annoyance. Furthermore, Lynette is furious to discover that Porter is the father of Julie's baby and tries to get him to realize he is not ready to be a father.

Bree Van de Kamp

Bree makes the decision to bury Alejandro's body to protect Carlos and Gaby and makes a pact with the other women to keep it a secret. Bree acts as leader in keeping the others calm but finds this difficult when she receives the same note that Mary Alice found just before she killed herself. She shows the note to Gaby, and the two agree not to do anything until whoever sent it contacts them again. The others tell her she should end her relationship with Chuck, as it is too dangerous, but she is reluctant to do so because of how happy they are. However, after she visits Paul Young, to discuss the note, he reveals that he mentioned the original note to the police and Bree realizes he spoke to Chuck. After relaying this information to Gaby, who encourages her to end the relationship, Bree thinks it might be wise to stay with Chuck in order to know what information he has. However, when she realizes he wants to propose, she breaks up with him. After Ben reveals he is planning to build on Alejandro's burial ground, the women decide to move the body but are shocked to learn it has already been dug up - by Ben when carrying out soil tests. Bree initially fails to convince Ben to get rid of the body in order to protect his project, but Ben changes his mind and enlists Mike's help to hide the body after he witnesses Chuck harassing Bree. The other women become angry as they find out that Bree has been hiding how much Chuck knows about the situation. Feeling alone, Bree breaks her sobriety. She continues to drink after failing to make amends with her friends and strike a deal with Chuck to protect them. In her depression, Bree gets drunk and goes to a motel room and following a conversation with Mary Alice, confessing how unhappy she is after losing her perfect life, she picks up a gun. Renee, who assumed Ben was with Bree, arrives in time to stop her and decides to move in until she is sure Bree is feeling better. Bree receives another letter reading "You're Welcome" in response to Chuck being killed in a hit and run. Bree continues to drink and Renee, who is unaware that she is an alcoholic, takes her on a night out and encourages her to hit on a man. After having done so, Bree continues taking men home and drinking, but does so in secret. Reverend Sykes tries to reach out to her, but she rejects him, confessing she doesn't know who she is anymore. After discovering, at a church bake sale, that one of the men she slept with was married, she admits in public to being the "town whore" and walks out. Bree continues her destructive behavior even after her friends try reaching out to her. She confesses to them that she tried to kill herself and that if they were truly her friends they would not have blamed her when all she was trying to do was protect them. When a guy at a bar tries to force himself on her she is rescued by Orson who was contacted by the girls. Bree breaks down admitting that she has made a mess of her life and he promises to help her. While taking care of Bree, Orson lies to her about the girls visiting and it is revealed that he was already aware of the murder and was, in fact, behind the secret notes to Bree all along in an effort to get her back. He also convinces her to take a trip with him to Maine in the hopes that she will stay. Before the initial trip to Maine, Bree stops at Orson's apartment, despite his protests, where she discovers that he was the one sending the threatening letters. Bree, appalled by this revelation, tells Orson she never wants to see him again, and leaves.

Gabrielle Solis

Gaby tries to relieve Carlos over his guilt from killing Alejandro but fails. She becomes worried when he can't perform sexually as sex was always the one thing that could get them through their tough times, but he tells her that everything has changed now and life will never be as it was. After breaking the 'drop-off' set by Dana, the head of the PTA at Juanita's school, Gabrielle is forced to walk from a distant car park and tries to stand up to Dana, but she is let down by the other parents who are scared of Dana's retaliation. Gaby again breaks the 'drop off' rules and accidentally hits Dana with her car. When Gaby visits her in the hospital, Dana says that serving as head of the PTA took over her life and ruined her marriage. Gaby is forced to take over as PTA head when Dana tells her if she refuses, she will press charges against her for the accident. Struggling to deal with his guilt, Carlos begins to drink heavily, concerning Gaby. One of his clients convinces him to attend rehab. Chuck interrogates Gaby and discovers that Alejandro was her stepfather. When she finds out that he knows this, she calls Carlos at rehab, but discovers he has checked himself out and she has no idea where he is. After finding Carlos passed out at home Gaby asks him if he remembers the night before as Chuck was killed but not only does he not recall where he was his car is nowhere to be found. During Chuck's funeral, a policeman recognizes Carlos as he went to the police station drunk the night before asking to make a confession. Gaby manages to cover for him and they realize he could not have killed Chuck. Gaby decides to re-decorate the living room so that Carlos is not reminded of the past when he returns from rehab, when the decorators find the blood stain under the carpet she tells them it is red wine. When she discovers that Alejandro's wife Claudia has tracked down Susan, believing them to be having an affair, she meets with her to reveal the truth. Claudia refuses to believe her until her own daughter admits that he abused her, too. When leaving, Claudia, who was with Gaby when the blood stain was revealed, realizes what it really is and tells her to get rid of it. When Juanita doesn't receive a valentine from the boy she likes Gaby makes one and pretends he sent it. When Juanita discovers the truth she tells her mother to stop lying to her because she isn't a kid anymore. She then asks where Carlos is and Gaby tells her truth and takes her to visit him in rehab.

Renee Perry

Renee becomes attracted to new neighbor Ben. When she discovers he is interested in helping the elderly, she pays Karen to pretend she visits and cooks for her. Ben, seeing this, asks her on a date but instead takes her to help serve food at an old people's home. Angry that she was tricked, she storms off but he admits she deserved it after trying to trick him. She reveals that she hates charity work because she was on the receiving end when she was young and hated feeling helpless. The two then begin to date. When she sees Ben leaving Bree's house early in the morning, she questions him. He explains that he was simply acting as a shoulder to cry on, as he is aware and helping with covering up Alejandro's murder, although Renee is not aware of this, and she forgives him. Chuck, however, purposely makes her doubt Ben again and when Renee goes to his house, she sees Bree drunkenly drive off in her car. After following Bree, Renee manages to stop her from killing herself and then decides to move in until she is feeling better. Whilst there she opens up about her mother's suicide and Bree thanks her for saving her life. Ben invites Renee over and tells he has special plans for them. He proposes to Renee with an offer which she accepts. However, when she opens up about how safe he makes her feel he take his offer back and admits he only proposed because he is having financial difficulties with his real estate, but that he does love her. Renee, hurt, ends their relationship. After Mike reveals Ben's financial troubles to Renee she offers to pay off the loan shark but Ben tells her he will take care of it himself. Instead she pays him without telling him.
