Old discussion
Shouldn't this be "christening of Poland" rather? I suspect this is a little bit of a mistranslation, conjuring up the image of the whole of Poland being submerged in a baptismal fount. dab (ᛏ) 21:00, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
- Then we should Baptism of Kiev as well, if only for the sake of standartization. --Ghirlandajo 01:58, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
In Poland the term used for description of the event is 'baptism of Poland' not 'Christianization of Poland'.The changes you made make the information incorrect as Chrzest Polski means Baptism of Poland --Molobo 00:21, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
- The Christianization of Poland was a process that took some centuries. The "baptism of Poland," by contrast, was an event, symbolized by the baptism of Poland's first ruler, that initiated this process of Christianization. The term "Baptism of Poland" is analogous to "Baptism of Kievan Rus'." logologist 07:56, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
Norman Davies reference to Communist Polish History version
(posting here, parts keep getting removed)
In 1966, People's Republic of Poland witnessed large festivities of the 1000-year anniversary of those events. Norman Davies in his book God's Playground writes how the communist state and Poland's church differently celebrated those events. The Church celebrated the 1000 years of Christianity in Poland ("SACRUM POLONIAE MILLENIUM"); however the communist government celebrated the secular 1000 years of Polish State ("TYSIACLECIE PAŃSTWA POLSKIEGO").[1] and Norman Davies continues quoting the Communist Polish slogans "SOCJALIZM GWARANCJA POKOJU I GRANIC" (The Communist Regime is the Guarantee of Peace and Frontiers). In the Eastern Territories gained from Germany in 1945, the banner proclaimed such messages as 'A Thousand Years of Poland on the Odra' or 'A THOUSAND YEARS OF POLAND ON THE BALTIC SEA', both plain mis-statements of fact". In another section of his book Davies explaines "there was no state, in the modern sense, there was no "Poland". "There is no hard evidence for a separate and distinct Polish linguistic community before the 12th century".
