Ian Walton Fowles (born 1979) is an American musician and author, best known as the current guitarist for the Orange County rock band The Aquabats, in which he performs under the stage name and persona of Eagle "Bones" Falconhawk (alternately EagleBones Falconhawk). Prior to joining The Aquabats, Fowles was also one of the founding members of the hardcore punk band Death by Stereo.
Biography
Fowles grew up in Orange County, and started playing guitar in his early teen years, claiming to have been inspired by seeing the guitarist character of Marty McFly in the film Back to the Future.[1] By the age of 14, he was regularly playing in local punk bands, eventually becoming part of the original formation of Death by Stereo in 1996. Fowles remained in the group's line-up until late 1998, when he left to serve a two-year mission for the LDS Church in Ohio.[1]
In 2006, Fowles joined The Aquabats as a full-time member, replacing original guitarist Courtney Pollock (aka "Chainsaw, the Prince of Karate"). His stage name was conceived in The Aquabats' van during his fist tour with the group: "Bones" was derived from his slender stature, while the bird names were playing off his last name's similarity to "fowl".[2][3] Fowles appeared in character on a 2007 episode of Yo Gabba Gabba!, playing a guitar solo as part of the show's "Cool Tricks" segment, and as of 2012, he currently portrays his fictionalized counterpart on The Aquabats' cable television series The Aquabats! Super Show!.
Among his many other musical endeavors, Fowles has also played live and/or recorded with Sense Field, Further Seems Forever, Brandon Saller, The D-Cons, Arthur Hatton[4], CleanX, Checkpoint Charley, Jacob Luttrell, Dead Sara and the 80's tribute bands The Electric Youth, IronHeart and Members Only. More recently, he played bass for AFI member Hunter Burgan's side project Hunter Revenge, who accompanied The Aquabats on their 2007 holiday tour.[5]
Fowles is left-handed, and currently plays a left-handed Fender Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster model guitar with The Aquabats. He had previously played a Dean Cadillac 1980 custom model.
He is a practicing Latter-day Saint and a doctoral student at Claremont Graduate University, where he studies at the School of Religion. In November 2010, Fowles published his first book, A Sound Salvation: Rock N' Roll as a Religion, a thesis which argues that rock music and culture satisfy an influential definition of "religion" in contemporary religious studies.[6]
