Jha is a surname of India and Nepal, typically originating from the Mithila. Jha's are Maithil Brahmins (Brāhamaṇas is the Sanskrit term) who form part of ancient Vedic Brahmins. Maithil Brāhamaṇas are a part of Panch-gauda Pañchgauḍa, a group of highest-ranking castes among Brahmin, who still strive to follow rites and rituals according to ancient Hindu canons. Maithil Brahmin is a community of highly cohesive, traditional Brahmins. They have a reputation for orthodoxy and interest in learning.Most of the Maithil Brahmins are Śāktas (worshippers of Śakti) and love Choora-dahi (beaten rice-curd), sugar, pickles, mangoes, discussions and debate. They also love fish which is a must for their marraige ceremony and nowadays a lust for mutton which is unworthy for a brahmin.Maithili language, Maithili language (मैथिली, মৈথিলী, Maithilī) are their mother tongue. Some of the maithils residing in bhagalpur area speak angika.
