David John Ison (born 15 September 1954) is the current Dean of St Paul's, London.[1]

David Ison, son of Richard Lea Ison, was educated at the University of Leicester (BA 1976), the University of Nottingham (BA 1978) and St John's College Nottingham (DPS 1979). He was ordained as a priest in 1979[2] before further studies in church history at King's College London, receiving a PhD from the University of London in 1985.

Ison began his ordained ministry as a curate at St Nicholas and St Luke's Deptford. From 1985 to 1988 he was a tutor at the Church Army Training College before being appointed vicar of St Philip' Potters Green in the West Midlands until 1993. Later, he was the officer for Continuing Ministerial Education in the Diocese of Exeter. He is a supporter of same-sex marriage.[3]

Ison became Dean of Bradford in September 2005.[4][5] On 6 March 2012, it was announced that he was to become the next Dean of St Paul's Cathedral from 25 May.[6][7]

On 5 June 2012, Ison led the prayers at the service of thanksgiving marking the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. On 14 October 2012, Dr Ison contended with disruption during evensong at St Paul's again by protestors[8], saying afterwards: "We regret the abuse of the cathedral's hospitality and its daily worship. We also disagree with the way in which some protestors are continuing to pursue the agenda of conflict with St Paul's, rather than consulting with us about how together we might better achieve the reforms which many people including Occupy are looking for." Despite this disruption, the women received communion and one of the congregation, Rod Oluyoka, told the London Evening Standard: "I thought it was part of the service. There was no commotion and no running about. It was all very calm."

In 1977, Ison married Rev Hilary Margaret Powell; together they have two sons and two daughters.
