Sonali Mukherjee is a girl from Dhanbad, India whose face was permanently disfigured by a gruesome acid attack in 2003 when she was just 18.[1] Her family has spent all their savings on her treatment and is now practically living in poverty.
Early life
Mukherjee was born in Dhanbad. She was a talented kid in childhood and she was also a National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet, which she had to quit after her attack.[2]
Incident
In 2002, Sonali started facing harassment from Tapas Mitra and his two friends Sanjay Paswan and Bhrahmadev Hajra, though never together. One of them even threatened her, saying that she was a Ghamandi (arrogant) person and they would teach her a lesson. Her father, after listening to this incident from her, complained to the families of the three men. Afterwards, on the night of 22 April when she was asleep on the roof of her house in Dhanbad, she was attacked with acid and left with a burnt face and other severe injuries. Her sister also got injured in this incident.[3]
Aftermath
The perpetrators were sentenced to nine years in jail but were granted bail when they appealed to High Court. Sonali and her family felt indignation at the decision of High Court. Her family approached the high court, and various other authorities for justice including the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, multiple MPs, but all she received in return was "aashwasan (assurances)... nothing else". The accused are roaming scot-free.[3]
Chandidas Mukherjee, the girl's father later told in an interview– "We appealed in the high court... Nothing happened. They were sent to jail but were released soon after. Now they are busy enjoying their lives. The law against acid attackers needs to be made tougher. Otherwise we will have many more Sonalis.[2]"
Appearance in Kaun Banega Crorepati
The 27-year-old's plight drew global attention when she appealed for euthanasia. However, Sonali's one wish was fulfilled when she got to meet Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of Kaun Banega Crorepati,[4] season 6. Sonali, who was accompanied by Lara Dutta Bhupathi in the game, won ₹25 lakh.[1]
