I've tagged this for cleanup. Taiyuan is a pretty large city, and the information here does no justice to it. The points are fairly important but need to be expanded upon. Benji 00:19, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Yangqu
During the Republic of China (1912-1949), the city's name was changed to "Yangqu", and it was not renamed back to "Taiyuan" until it was captured in 1949 by Communist forces.
One Chinese have told me:
The sentence in wiki page of Taiyuan city is wrong. Yangqu just a county in the north side of Taiyuan city.
Because in 1946 - 1949, the highest military organization in Shanxi (province) is named "太原綏靖公署", the meaning of first two Chinese characters is Taiyuan, and official newspaper offices also use "Taiyuan" in news.
Resources
Taiyuan is rich in mineral resources, most notedly coal deposits. When the Japanese invaded Taiyuan, they enslaved the men and women and made them mine for coal and other mineral resources in horrible conditions.
