Konstantinos "Kostas" Mitroglou (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Μήτρογλου, born 12 March 1988) is a Greek professional footballer who plays as a Striker for Greek Super League club Olympiacos and the Greek national football team. Mitroglou started his career at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he established himself as an excellent prospect. He was signed by Olympiacos in the summer of 2007 and has been with the club ever since, except for two loan spells at Panionios and Atromitos.
Club career
Early career
Mitroglou was born in Kavala, but soon after he and his family moved to Germany. He began his career at Maura Poulia, at the age of eleven, he scored 24 goals in 16 matches. He joined MSV Duisburg in 2004, after one season with the club, he joined Borussia Mönchengladbach. Mitroglou was a dominant player in the Under 19 Fußball-Bundesliga.
Olympiacos
After making an impression in the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship, Mitroglou was signed by Greek champions Olympiacos. Making a few substitute and starting 11 appearances for the Piraeus based team in his first season, Mitroglou scored his first Super League goal for the club against Levadiakos and more notably scored the only goal in the Greek Super Cup clash against AEL 1964. The promising striker was instrumental for Olympiakos during the last fixtures of the season 2007–08 netting several goals and helping towards the claim of the league trophy.
On 16 September, Mitroglou scored the first goal in the 2–0 UEFA Cup 1st round, first leg victory away against FC Nordsjælland. Season 2008–09 saw limited playing time in the starting 11 for Mitroglou. The then coach Ernesto Valverde preferred to play with Diogo Luis Santo as the lone striker.
In the 2009–10 season, Mitroglou featured in almost every Olympiakos match, and saw him net his first Champions League goal. He also netted two goals against arch rivals Panathinaikos. Mitroglou got his opportunity as the other Olympiakos strikers were injured, and grasped those opportunities with both hands playing very well as the target man.[2] He was Olympiacos' topscorer of the 2009–10 season with 14 goals (9 in the Greek League, one in the Greek Cup and four in the Champions League).
Loan spells
In January 2011 he moved to Panionios F.C. for a six month loan. He then spent 2011–12 on loan at Atromitos, scoring 16 goals for them.[3]
Back to Olympiacos
The 2012-13 season found Mitroglou back to his team, Olympiacos. After Ernesto Valverde left, he was appointed by the new coach Leonardo Jardim. Mitroglou showed a good form in the pre-season training scoring a total of three goals, two of them in a friendly against Malaga CF at Karaiskakis Stadium. The season however started a bit iregular for him since he had to compete with 1st choice striker Rafik Djebbour for the starting eleven. That didn't get him too much playing time and came mostly as a substitute. In a Champions League Group Stage match against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, Mitroglou was in the starting eleven and he scored with a header near the end of the first half, temporary equalizing for his team (3-1 Final Score). He managed to score 4 goals in Champions League Group Stage. He scored two against Arsenal F.C. and two against Montpellier HSC. In the Greek League he has already scored 7 goals.[4]
