Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV) is the eleventh, upcoming installment of the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise, announced to be released by Rockstar Games on October 16, 2007 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.[1] During the 2006 Microsoft E³ press conference, it was announced that Grand Theft Auto IV would be available for the Xbox 360 and that Rockstar will offer exclusive episodic content to the Xbox 360. [2] (though they did not specifically limit the content to GTA IV). After the press conference, Rockstar Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive posted a press release announcing Grand Theft Auto IV will be released simultaneously for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.
Rumors and speculation
- On December 17 and December 21, 2003, Take-Two Interactive registered the trademarks GTA: Bogota and GTA: Tokyo.[3] This could possibly be a hint as to the location of Grand Theft Auto IV, or possibly a red herring to keep fans guessing as to the next locale.
- GTAForums.com speculation suggests that London is a likely candidate as the city which the game will center around. Some suggest that it will return to London, as it did in original Grand Theft Auto's expansion packs; GTA: London '69 and GTA: London '61, seeing as it returned to the cities of the original GTA in GTA III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas. It could also suggest that they won't, given that GTA IV will not be a part of the GTA III series of games. It should be noticed that the logo appearing on the official website of GTA IV, and on the press kit use the same typeface as in the GTA III series, which did not happen with GTA and GTA 2, possibly implying a common continuity or canon between the GTA III and GTA IV series.
- Several European magazine articles have originally claimed that the next GTA would take place in London, Manchester or Mexico City.[citation needed]
