Perseus "Percy" Jackson is a fictional character, the titular character and narrator of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and a protagonist in the sequel series The Heroes of Olympus.
Percy is the son of Poseidon, called Neptune in The Heroes of Olympus. He is also said to be one of the tyrants of Syracuse. He begins in The Lightning Thief as a troubled twelve-year-old boy with dyslexia and ADHD. When his class takes a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of his teachers turns into a Fury and attacks him. His friend Grover then reveals himself to be a satyr and takes Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a place were demigods can train. Percy then learns that he, being a child of Poseidon, is mentioned in the Great Prophecy given by the Oracle. With the help of the other demigods at Camp Half-Blood, Percy defeats the forces of Kronos and saves the camp. He is then given a new prophecy by the next Oracle, his friend Rachel Elizabeth Dare.
In The Heroes of Olympus, Percy begins the series missing, with Annabeth Chase searching for him. He returns with amnesia in The Son of Neptune, where he comes across Camp Jupiter, a camp for the children of the Roman gods. Mars tells him to go with other demigods to Alaska and free the god of death, Thanatos. He regains his memory, and he and Annabeth travel through Tartarus in an attempt to defeat Gaea's forces and close the Doors of Death.

The Lightning Thief
Percy begins the series as a twelve-year-old boy with dyslexia and ADHD, who has been expelled from every school he has ever attended. When his class takes a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, his pre-algebra teacher Mrs. Dodds transforms into a Fury and attacks him. Percy's Latin teacher Mr. Brunner gives Percy Anaklusmos or the English translation, Riptide, and sends Mrs. Dodds to Tartarus.
When Percy and his mother go to Montauk[disambiguation needed], his friend Grover Underwood comes to tell them to leave immediately. They drive away in a horrible storm, and a Minotaur takes Percy's mother in a blinding flash of light. In anger, Percy kills the Minotaur and takes one of its horns. He wakes up three days later, healed by nectar and ambrosia, at Camp Half-Blood. Grover reveals himself to be a satyr, and Mr. Brunner reveals himself to be Chiron the centaur. As nobody knows whose son Percy is, he is placed in the Hermes, the god of messengers, travelers, and thieves, cabin. After several water-related incidents, a trident mark appears above Percy's head, his father Poseidon claiming him.
The Oracle tells Percy to find the stolen lightning bolt of Zeus, as well as with his friend Grover and Annabeth Chase, a daughter of Athena because the god Zeus think that Percy is to blame for stealing the lightning bolt. After defeating several monsters including Medusa herself! they find Hades, who took Percy's mother. Apparently, Hades helm of darkness (his symbol of power) seems to have been lost too. Hades also blames Percy for stealing his helm and wants to kill Percy and his mother and pour the death back into the real World. They use magical pearls to save themselves from Hades and discover that Ares has the bolt. Percy challenges Ares to a duel and wins. Lord Hades realizes that Percy did not steal his helm of darkness, returned Percy's mother safely.
After the bolt is given back to Zeus, Percy's friend Luke Castellan reveals that he was behind the theft and sends a scorpion to kill Percy, who in turn slays the arthropod. Luke Castellan was tricked by the Titan lord Kronos into stealing the lightning bolt of Zeus for Kronos. But, Ares, the war god captures Luke. However, Ares frees Luke because if the lightning bolt was stolen it would cause one of the biggest wars in all of history. Being the war god, Ares thought that was a good thing. In the end Percy restores peace by returning the lightning bolt to Zeus by the summer solistice.
The Sea of Monsters
Percy is attacked by Laestrygonians at his school, but is saved by Annabeth and his cyclops half-brother, Tyson. When the three of them go to Camp Half-Blood they notice that Thalia's pine tree (named so because Thalia, a daughter of Zeus, who turned her into a tree when she died to save her friends) is poisoned, and so the borders are weakened and monsters can enter the camp. The daughter of Ares, Clarisse, is sent to retrieve the Golden Fleece to heal the tree. Percy and Annabeth decide to go along, but Dionysus and Tantalus, who replaced Chiron when the centaur was accused of poisoning the tree, refuse to let them. The two sneak out to join in with Tyson. On the way Percy and his friends meet the traitor, Luke Castellan. Thanks to Percy's water powers and Tyson's brutal strength they manage to escape out of Luke's clutches. They find out about Luke's plans to give Kronos rebirth
Meanwhile, Grover has been captured by Polyphemus. Grover creates an empathy link with Percy and calls for help. Percy through his empathy link sees that the Golden Fleece is also kept in the island that Grover was captured by the cyclops, Polyphemus. Percy, Annabeth and Tyson were nearly killed by a hydra before Clarisse saves them using the ship lent to her by her godly father Ares. However, the ship got wrecked and Tyson and Clarrise were nowhere to be found.
As Percy and Annabeth journey to many islands including the island of the witch Circe in which Percy gets turned into a guinea pig. Thanks to Annabeth, Percy gets back to normal. They also pass the island of the Sirens.Percy learns several stories of Thalia. Soon after Percy and Annabeth make it to the island. To their annoyance they had to save Clarrise, Grover and take the Golden fleece. Percy,Annabeth and Clarrise dueled with Polyphemus in vain until Tyson arrived. He saved by a hippocampus named Rainbow. They recapture the Golden Fleece and return to the mortal world, sending Clarisse on a plane with the Fleece so that she can put it in Thalia's pine tree which was getting worse day by day. Luke Castellan, under the orders of Kronos kidnaps Percy again and nearly kills him in a duel, but Percy tricks Luke into revealing that he poisoned the tree, by sending the information in a secret Iris message to the wine god Dionysus, proving Chiron's innocence and leading to his rehiring. When the Fleece is put on Thalia's tree, it restores the tree back to full health and turns Thalia back into a human.
The Titan's Curse
Percy, Annabeth, and Thalia go to Westover Hall after Grover finds two demigod siblings named Nico and Bianca. They are attacked by a manticore named Dr. Thorn, but are saved by Artemis and her hunters, including one named Zoe Nightshade; Artemis then goes missing. Annabeth, however, is captured by Dr. Thorn.
Percy and his companions go on a quest to find Artemis before the winter solstice meeting of the Olympian council, as Artemis could change an important vote on the war against Kronos, as well as capture and kill a monster that Artemis was hunting, with strength to obliterate Olympus. Percy, Thalia, Zoe, Bianca, and Grover begin the journey, but Percy receives a telepathic message from a hippocampus to save the Ophiotaurus at Long Island Sound. Lagging slightly behind, Percy calls on Blackjack, a Pegasus he liberated in The Sea of Monsters, to help him catch up. When they stop to rest briefly on top of the Chrystler building, Dionysus snares Percy and Blackjack in grape vines. Percy escapes and sees Dr. Thorn, who he follows into the National Museum of Natural History with Annabeth's invisibility cap. He sees Dr. Thorn being beaten by "the General" with the use of dinosaur teeth that grow into skeleton warriors. Percy races to tell his friends about these warriors at the National Air and Space Museum, but they are attacked by the Nemean Lion, which they subdue. Apollo takes them to the "junkyard of the gods" in Gila Claw, Arizona, where Percy meets Ares and speaks to Aphrodite, who insists that Percy is deeply in love with Annabeth. Bianca tries to steal a statue and is killed by Talos.
When Percy and his friend are attacked by skeletal warriors at Hoover Dam, Percy is saved by a mortal with the ability to see through the mist, Rachel Elizabeth Dare. Rachel confuses the skeletons and allows Percy and his friends to escape.
At the advice of Apollo, Percy consults Nereus about what the monster is that could destroy Olympus. Nereus says that the monster is Bessie, the Ophiotaurus that Percy saved. Dr. Thorn and his henchmen then ambush the demigods. Dr. Thorn tries to coax Thalia into killing and burning the Ophiotaurus, which would give her the power to kill the gods. Percy, Zoe, and Grover pull her away. They then agree to send the Ophiotaurus to Olympus with Grover, and give Poseidon the skin of the Nemean Lion as an offering. They go to seek the help of Annabeth's father. Going to the Garden of Hesperides, the dragon Ladon poisons Zoe as she tries to help Percy and Thalia cross. They continue up to Mount Orthrys, where Artemis is holding up the sky as part of the Titan's curse. Percy takes the burden as he is prophesized to, and Artemis tricks Atlas into taking the burden back. Annabeth is rescued and Zoe dies. Artemis transforms her into a constellation.
The gods debate whether or not to kill Percy and the Ophiotaurus, but vote for their survival. Bessie will be kept on Olympus. When the group goes back to Camp Half-Blood, Percy tells Nico what happened to his sister, and the boy blames Percy, sending an ambush of skeletal warriors to the Underworld. Percy realizes and tells Annabeth and Grover that Nico is a son of Hades; they vow to keep it a secret.
The Battle of the Labyrinth
Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood after being attacked by Empusa cheerleaders. He learns about the labyrinth designed by Daedalus in the palace of King Minos in Crete. He then meets the camp's new sword master Quintus. During a battle drill against giant scorpions, he and Annabeth accidentally find an opening to the labyrinth. Percy learns that Luke used this labyrinth before and is going to use it again to lead his army straight into Camp Half-Blood. They meet privately in the Athena cabin after Annabeth reads the next prophecy, and Percy asks if she is okay. Annabeth cries and holds out her arms for a hug. Percy tells her that she shouldn't worry about whatever she was crying about, unaware that Annabeth believes the prophecy means that Percy will die.
Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson use the labyrinth to try to find Daedalus, who can prevent Luke from obtaining Ariadne's String, which will help him navigate the maze. They encounter Kampê and free her prisoner and Tyson's idol, Briares the Hekatonkheires. They encounter Hera and battle at the farm of Geryon before they see Nico again, still convinced that Percy killed Bianca. Percy summons the spirit of Bianca, who says that it was not Percy's fault that she died. Nico is convinced and puts his grudge behind him. The next day Percy and his companions attempt to find Hephaestus, believing that he will know the location of Daedalus. Grover feels the presence of Pan, and he and Tyson depart in search of their own quest. After meeting with the god of the forge, Percy and Annabeth travel to Mount St. Helens, where telekhines attack Percy. He and Annabeth have a short argument where he tells her to flee. Annabeth kisses Percy and tells him to be careful before fleeing. Percy causes the volcano to erupt, releasing him from the labyrinth and draining his energy.
When Percy awakens he finds himself on Ogygia with Calypso, who treats his burns and returns him to the mortal world. Percy finds Annabeth and gathers the help of Rachel. As Pan has now died, Grover comes back to help them. They learn that Quintus is Daedalus, Kronos possesses Luke, and Kronos has found out about Nico's divine parent. Luke has already found Ariadne's String, and the whole camp fights his army. Grover saves the day by using a Panic, a power used by Pan. Annabeth tells Percy about the last line of the prophecy.
The Last Olympian
Percy and his friend Beckendorf attempt to destroy Kronos' ship the Princess Andromeda. Kronos remains one step ahead and Beknorf is killed. Percy falls unconscious but is rescued by Tyson. He finds himself in his father's underwater palace, which is under attack by Oceanus. Percy tries to stay and help his father, but Poseidon sends him back to Camp Half-Blood. Chiron finally tells Percy the Great Prophecy that he is part of, and Percy in turn tells Chiron that there is a spy in the camp. That issue is put aside until the impending Titan war is ended. Percy and Nico leave to discover Nico's plan for Percy's survival. They visit Luke's mother, Percy's mother, and Hestia. Percy's mother gives him a blessing that will allow him to return to the Underworld. Nico betrays Percy for information on his past, but then helps Percy escape confinement. Percy bathes in the River Styx to gain near-immortality.
Percy emerges in New York City, leaving Nico behind and meeting up with Annabeth. The entire camp, minus the Ares cabin (who refuses to fight), and the battle begins. Percy finds that Ethan, a son of Nemesis, would have killed Percy, having hit him in his vulnerable spot, had Annabeth not protected him. Percy tells Annabeth about the River Styx and how Ethan was going to hit him in his vulnerable spot, the small of his back. Percy then falls asleep and dreams of Kronos questioning Ethan about where Percy's vulnerable spot is, but Ethan says that he does not know. Rachel then flies into New York to tell Percy that she does not know who the hero of the Great Prophecy is, but it is not Percy.
A drakon[disambiguation needed] enters the camp, and a camper posing as Clarisse tries to kill it but is mortally wounded. The real Clarisse comes in and kills it. The fake reveals herself to be Silena Beauregard, who was also the traitor. Meanwhile, Percy and his friends are in a last stand against Kronos, who breaks into the Empire State Building, headquarters of Olympus. Percy and Kronos (in the form of Luke) battle, and Ethan tries to rebel against Kronos. His sword ricochets back into his stomach, killing him. Before dying, Ethan tells Percy that minor gods deserve better. When Annabeth tries to tell Luke about the promise of family, he hits her, sending him back into his non-evil self in shock. He kills himself in shame, destroying the vessel for Kronos and becoming the hero of the prophecy.
Percy turns sixteen that day, and a prophecy stated that the first child of the "Big Three" (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades), to turn sixteen will either help or hurt the gods. Rachel becomes the next Oracle and tells Percy a new prophecy. New cabins are built for the minor gods. Percy is given the choice to be immortal, but refuses. Percy and Annabeth kiss, and he is praised throughout the camp.
The Heroes of Olympus
The Lost Hero
Set at least four months after the end of the Percy Jackson series, The Lost Hero introduces the characters Jason Grace, Piper McLean, and Leo Valdez. Jason wakes up on a bus from a camp for juvenile delinquents. He has no memory of his identity or how he came to be on the bus, although Piper and Leo claim to be his best friends. The group is taking a field trip to the Grand Canyon, where a horde of Venti attack the three and their supervising teacher, Coach Gleeson Hedge, who reveals himself to be a Satyr and confronts the Venti. Jason is able to defeat the Venti's helpers, but the Venti capture Coach Hedge and flee. Two strangers arrive in a flying chariot: they are Annabeth and Butch, son of Iris. Annabeth is hostile towards Jason when they meet as she had a vision in which Hera gave her a clue concerning the whereabouts of her missing boyfriend, Percy Jackson, saying to find Percy she had to find Jason, but Percy was not there once she arrived. Jason, Piper, and Leo are taken to Camp Half Blood and are informed that they are demigods, children of the ancient Greek gods. Leo and Piper are then claimed by their godly parents, Hephaestus and Aphrodite, respectively. Jason is revealed as a son of Jupiter after he summons his power to call lightning. He is also revealed to be the brother of Thalia, a main character from the Percy Jackson series. Jason remembers Thalia when he sees a picture of her in Zeus's cabin and learns that Hera has stolen his memories. Less than a day later, the three new demigods are sent on an urgent quest to rescue Hera who has been kidnapped by a giant. The three set off on the back of a giant robotic dragon, Festus. Along the way, Jason, Piper and Leo meet and confront Boreas, three Cyclopes, Medea, King Midas, King Lycaon and his pack of Werewolves, and Aeolus. They discover that Hera's kidnappers are Gaea's underlings and that she seeks to overthrow the Olympians. They save Piper's father, whom Enceladus has held ransom, and Hera. They temporarily stall Gaea's plans, but the newly risen Porphyrion is able to escape. With part of his memory returned, Jason realizes that he is from the Roman counterpart to Camp Half-Blood, called Camp Jupiter, and that Hera switched his place with Percy Jackson, who is now at Camp Jupiter with no memory of his life at Camp Half-Blood.
The Son of Neptune
The Son of Neptune opens with Percy Jackson being chased by two gorgons. While making his escape, he runs into an old woman named June. The old woman reveals herself to be Juno (Hera) and gives him a choice: provide her with a favor or run away. As a favor, Percy carries her across the Little Tiber, which is a powerful river. In doing so, he loses his invincibility from the River Styx. When he reaches his destination he meets Hazel Levesque, a daughter of Pluto, and Frank Zhang, a son of Mars. Percy saves Frank from the Gorgons by drowning them. Percy is then taken into the camp after Juno introduces him to Camp Jupiter. During war games, a Camp Jupiter activity, Percy impresses everyone with his battle skills and instincts, even though they are not Roman tactics and are more Greek-style. After the games, one of the Fifth Cohort's leaders is found severely injured and dies, only to come back to life a few moments later. Mars, the god of war, then appears and informs the campers that "Death has lost its grip.". He also claims Frank Zhang as his son. Mars insists that Percy and Frank must go on a quest to free Thanatos, the god of Death. He has been captured in Alaska and is no longer able to keep mortals dead. Frank requests that Hazel also come on the quest, and they set off towards Alaska. While travelling on their quest, Percy struggles to regain his memory. Time and time again, he recalls things but never where from. The only clear memory to him is a girl named Annabeth. Hazel reveals that she had died long ago, but that Nico di Angelo, son of Hades and her half-brother, saved her from the Underworld. Frank informs the other two that he was given a piece of wood that is tied to his life; if the wood burns up completely, he will die. After many events and monsters, such as basilisks, giants, and an unexpected meeting with the Amazons, they finally get to Alaska, where they find Thanatos in chains. His chains can only be broken by the piece of wood tied to Frank's life. Percy defends Frank while he melts Thanatos' chains with his burning stick, losing more and more of his life. Hazel attacks Alcyoneus, the giant born to oppose Pluto. Thanatos is eventually freed and with the help of Hazel's horse, Arion, they drag the giant out of its land (Alaska) to Canada where it is able to be killed. Percy regains his memory as they race back to Camp Jupiter. Knowing that the camp is under attack, Percy takes charge and leads the Romans into battle with the help of some of his old friends from Camp Half-Blood and the Amazons. The morale of the Romans is recharged after discovering that Percy recovered the camp's lost standard, which had been missing for years. Percy then challenges the giant, Polybotes, to a duel and calls to Terminus, the Roman border god, to help him defeat the giant. He has been told that only when gods and demigods work together can the giants be defeated. Percy eventually defeats Polybotes by using the head of Terminus' statue as a weapon. The camp then name him a praetor, a leader of the Roman camp. The Greek demigods from Camp Half-Blood appear in the flying ship Argo II sailing towards the camp. The Romans argue over attacking the ship. As praetor, Percy orders them to hold their fire. If the Greeks attacked, he would be to blame, but he is not worried. Holding hands with Frank and Hazel, he approaches his "other family".
The Mark of Athena
After sending Leo's video to Camp Jupiter, Argo II prepares to land on the Roman camp's border, but Terminus, the god of borders, stops them for no weapons are allowed inside. It is then decided to let the ship stay in the air while Annabeth, Leo, Piper, and Jason meet the Roman campers. Percy Jackson together with Hazel and Frank welcomes the Greek demigods and Coach Hedge. A reunion is held, and during the conversations, Ella, the harpy, speaks about a prophecy that refers to Annabeth's quest of the Mark of Athena. Piper uses her charm speak in order to divert the topic. While Jason gives Piper a tour of the camp, Reyna talks to Annabeth alone. During the conversation, the Argo II, which is controlled by Leo Valdez who was possessed by eidolons, fires at Camp Jupiter. The Romans defend their bases, and Annabeth, Piper, Jason, and Percy rush inside the Argo II to stop Leo from firing on the campaign. They start to leave the camp while Hazel and Frank delay the Roman campers. The Argo II becomes damaged, and Leo lands for repairs, encountering Echo and Narcissus. There they are told that they have to search for the Mark of Athena to bring the Romans and the Greeks together. In their journey, they meet Phorcys and Keto. The seven quickly leave for Charleston. Annabeth, Piper, and Hazel go to Battery Park to find a mysterious ghost, which happened to be Aphrodite. Jason, Leo, and Frank go to a museum in Fort Sumter. Only the girls' story is told. Aphrodite tells them about their love lives and the other Olympians that are suffering from being confused about their Roman or Greek identity. After their talk, the angry Romans come, and war breaks out. Annabeth meets Reyna in Fort Sumter who was there to retrieve a map which will save her friends. Reyna begs Annabeth to come with her and die a painful death to save her camp, but Annabeth tells Reyna that she will only follow the mark. The seven reach the ship and leave safely to go to Chiron's brothers, who live in the sea. During the ride, they get attacked by a shrimp monster. Leo, Frank, and Hazel go underwater and find icthyocentaurs, Chiron's brothers. They find the three's story interesting and speed their way to Rome. They meet Hercules near the pillars, or the entrance to Rome and Piper and Jason get the second horn of Achelous, the bull-headed river god. Even though it was Hercules who ordered them to cut it off, Piper decided that Hercules did not deserve the horn and keeps it for herself. She brings forth a pile of supplies, and Hercules falls. The seven cross the pillars and sail into Rome. Annabeth has to find the Athena Parthenos by following the Mark of Athena and battle its guardian Arachne. Percy, Jason, and Piper travel into an underground area and battle the twin giants, Otis and Ephialtes, the anti-Dionysus. Frank, Hazel, and Leo travel in search of Nico, and find Archimedes' scrolls on spheres. In the end, Annabeth outwits Arachne by tricking her into weaving her own trap. Percy and Jason battle the giants and with some (very little) help from Dionysus's roman counterpart, Bacchus, they rescue Nico. Frank, Hazel, and Leo battle the Eidolons and rescue Archimedes' scrolls. They all meet up where Annabeth secures the Athena Parthenos. However, Arachne pulls Percy and Annabeth into Tartarus by some spider silk as the statue is lifted onto their ship. After Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus, the remaining six demigods and Coach Hedge are at a meeting. Nico says Percy told him to lead the demigods to the Doors of Death, while he and Annabeth would meet them at the end of Tartarus on the Doors' other side. Nico and Hazel both say they are fairly sure Percy and Annabeth are not dead yet. The book closes with Leo telling Festus the Dragon figurehead to set sails: they have friends to save.
Description
Personality
Perseus has proved himself to be a natural leader, who is brave, spirited, and willing to risk his life for those that he cares about. His sense of humor is sarcastic and intelligent, and his demeanor is laid-back. While he can be intelligent at times, Percy can act unintelligent and absentminded. His prowess has earned him the respect of all Olympians, including Artemis, who dislikes men; Dionysus, who dislikes heroes; and Hades, who dislikes humans.
As part of being a demigod, Percy has a short temper and tends to act before he thinks, which leads to extreme consequences at times. He has always been branded a rebel, and he dislikes being restrained or forced to obey. Since getting his memories taken by Hera and fighting monsters, Percy has developed a "wolf stare" that he believes seems to say, "No matter how bad you think you are, I'm worse." He is also unafraid of the mortal world. He believes that this may be part of Lupa, the Capitoline Wolf's, influence over him when he stayed with her pack.
Percy's friends are mostly misfits and outcasts, and his "fatal flaw", according to Athena, is excessive personal loyalty. She says that he would risk the world and even his own life to save a loved one, or even a stranger. Kronos exploited this trait in Percy Jackson & the Olympians by putting his friends in peril so that Percy would try to save them and be killed in the process. In The Son of Neptune, Mars tells Percy that he believes this loyalty could hinder the completion of the Prophecy of Seven, but Hera states that his fatal flaw will keep the seven together. Hera also mentions that when a daughter of Athena, such as Annabeth, comes to Rome, it will cause trouble.
Appearance
Percy has been described as a tall young man with jet-black hair and bright sea green eyes. His hair had a streak of gray in it from holding the sky to save Annabeth in The Titan's Curse, but this disappears sometime during his disappearance throughout The Lost Hero. Depending on his mood, Percy's eyes may appear to be blue. He gets these appearance traits from his father. Multiple female characters in the series have called him attractive.
While Percy starts the series below average in athletics, he becomes fit and muscular during the course of his training at Camp Half-Blood. After slaying the giant Polybotes, Percy receives a tattoo of a trident and the letters SPQR on the underside of his arm, signifying that he is a full member of the Twelfth Legion Fulminata.
Film portrayal
In the films Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and its sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Percy is portrayed by Logan Lerman.[1]
Abilities
Like most demigods, Percy has ADHD and dyslexia, the former because he is used to battle and quick thinking, and the latter because his brain is meant to understand Ancient Greek and not English. Percy has limited clairvoyance because of his father's unpredictable nature. Sometimes in his visions, Percy is another person, such as Heracles. He has a Greek, unpredictable, singular fighting style and is an expert swordsman. After bathing in the River Styx, Percy was given the curse of Achilles, which he loses when it is swept away in the Little Tiber. In addition, he has an empathy link with his satyr guardian Grover.
Being a son of Poseidon, one of the "Big Three" gods (the others being Zeus and Hades), Percy is more powerful than the children of other gods, and he has a degree of divine authority over his father's domains and subjects. Because he is the son of the god of the sea, Percy is gifted with several water-induced abilities, such as hydrokinesis, a disproportionate amount of superhuman clarity, strength, speed, agility, and endurance in the water, water propulsion, breathing underwater, immunity in water, water solidification, sailing skills, communication with marine animals, aerokinesis of hurricanes and water-related storms, cryokinesis, heat resistance, and healing when in contact with water. Poseidon is also the god of earthquakes, and so Percy can use geokinesis to a moderate degree. Percy has also been given superhuman strength.
Magical Items
Percy's main weapon is Anaklusmos, which he calls Riptide. It is made of celestial bronze and was given to him by Chiron. He first used it against Mrs. Dodds, his pre-algebra teacher, when she turned into an Fury and attacked him. When not in sword form, Riptide appears as a ballpoint pen. It was a weapon of Heracles, who received it from Zoe Nightshade. He also uses javelins with a grappling hook and an explosive setting on occasion.
Percy has several magical items from battles against monsters. The first of these is the horn of the Minotaur, which he obtained after killing the beast, assuming that it had killed his mother. Another is the head of Medusa, which he cut off after killing it. He gave it to his mother, who used its petrifying power to turn her abusive husband Gabe to stone. When he killed the Nemean Lion, Percy cut off its pelt but threw it in the sea later on as an offering to Poseidon.
Many other magical items were given to Percy as gifts. Daedalus, in the form of Quintus, gave him a Stygian ice whistle, which shatters if it is blown once. His half-brother Tyson gave him a wristwatch that turns into a shield, but it was lost in The Battle of the Labyrinth. Percy's father Poseidon gave him a sand dollar for his fifteenth birthday; he split it in half, giving the halves to the Hudson River and the East River to heal the pollution and have them join the forces of the Olympians. Hermes gave him multivitamins that can prevent or reverse nearly any attack, as well as a thermos of winds. A Nereid gave Percy magical pearls that can transport a person to the sea when smashed. His friend Calypso gifted him with moonlace, which he planted to remember her by. Luke stole talaria from his father Hermes and gave them to Percy. Percy gave them to Grover, but the talaria were a trap and Grover was almost pulled into Tartarus. Prometheus gave him Pandora's pithos, which he later gave to Hestia to give her hope.
Others Percy took or have unknown origins. Percy seized the eagle of the Twelfth Legion of Camp Jupiter, which he used to destroy hundreds of monsters. He used chameleon armor to disguise himself in a short story called "The Bronze Dragon". He took the Golden Fleece from Polyphemus and used it to heal Annabeth before saving Thalia's tree with it. He stole the wings of Daedalus, but they became too damaged and he threw them away.
Relationships
Magical pets and companions
Percy has two magical pets and companions. The first is Blackjack, a Pegasus that Percy liberated in The Sea of Monsters. Since then, Blackjack has become his personal steed and the two can speak to each other, Blacjack repeatedly has to save Percy's life because Percy needs someone as beast as he is to accompany him on quests, Blackjack is quite fond of sugar cubes. The second is Mrs. O'Leary, a pet hellhound that he received from Daedalus before the inventor died in The Battle of the Labyrinth.
Love interests
Annabeth Chase is Percy's primary love interest and eventual girlfriend. Because their divine parents Poseidon and Athena have a rivalry over the city of Athens, they were at ends in The Lightning Thief. Through the series, they grow more fond of each other, and Aphrodite tells Percy that they will have an "interesting love life" as seen in The Mark of Athena.
Percy showed jealousy towards Luke Castellan, as Annabeth would get protective and caring towards the son of Hermes. In The Last Olympian, Luke helps Percy realize his true feelings for Annabeth. Annabeth has shown jealousy over the clear-sighted mortal Rachel Elizabeth Dare, but this is solved when Rachel becomes the Oracle. Annabeth has also expressed jealousy towards Calypso.
When Percy disappears in The Lost Hero, it is revealed that he and Annabeth were officially dating, and Annabeth is the first clear memory that Percy develops after Hera takes his memories away. While at Camp Jupiter, Percy sees a possibility of college life and marriage with Annabeth.
Percy has had other, minor love interests. After Percy is stranded on the island of Ogygia, he meets Calypso, who nurses him back to health. She offers to keep him on the island, but he turns her down. It is later revealed that the three Fates sent Percy to the island to torment Calypso. While Percy is living in the mortal world, he would spend frequent amounts of time with Rachel Elizabeth Dare. Rachel kissed him on one occasion, and Percy never openly stated his feelings about her. When Rachel became the next Oracle, she could not have a relationship.
Friends
Grover Underwood is Percy's best friend. When they both went to Yancy Academy, Percy would protect Grover from bullies. When Percy wakes up at Camp Half-Blood after battling the Minotaur, Grover reveals to Percy that he is a satyr tasked with protecting Percy. In The Sea of Monsters, Grover and Percy build an empathy link and communicate with each other and can pick up on the other's feelings. When Percy vanished in The Lost Hero, Grover gathered a large amount of satyrs to look for him.
Percy has made friends with the other two children of the "Big Three", which would make all three of them half-cousins, as their fathers were brothers. Thalia Grace, the daughter of Zeus, first met him when he healed her tree in The Sea of Monsters and, inadverdently, brought her back to life. Percy felt intimidated by her skill at first, and they acted like brother and sister for most of the series. At the end, when Thalia joins the hunters of Artemis, she hugs him and says, "I am honoring a friend". The son of Hades, Nico di Angelo, began by annoying Percy with his questions. When his sister is killed at the end of The Titan's Curse, Nico blames Percy and refuses to speak to him until Percy channels Bianca to tell Nico that it wasn't Percy's fault. Afterwards, they developed a brotherly relationship.
Percy sometimes has a rocky start to his friendships, but by the end builds mutual respect. Clarisse La Rue began Percy Jackson & the Olympians hating Percy, but in The Sea of Monsters Percy saves Clarisse and sends her ahead with the Golden Fleece, which she appreciates. By the end of the series, they respect each other. Zoe Nightshade, the daughter of Atlas, similarly did not like Percy at the beginning of The Titan's Curse, but came to respect him by her death.
At Camp Jupiter, Percy made friends as well. Throughout The Son of Neptune, Percy and Hazel Levesque build a close friendship. When Octavian blackmailed Hazel, Percy said that he would uncap Riptide if he did anything for her. Hazel kissed Percy on the cheek once, but Percy says it was a sisterly kiss. Reyna is a co-praetor and friend of Percy. She was first bitter towards Percy but changes as The Son of Neptune goes on. She invites Percy to become a praetor before he proves his ability because she says it will draw them closer as "friends", but Percy says that he already has a girlfriend and declines her offer. When he defeats Polybotes with the help of Terminus, he earns the rating praetor and works with Reyna.
Family
Sally Jackson is Percy's mother, and they have a clear, close bond. In The Lightning Thief, when Percy believes that his mother was killed by the Minotaur, he kills the beast in vengeance. It was later discovered that the monster just brought her to Hades. Sally's first husband, Gabe Ugliano, was abusive to her, and Percy called him "Smelly Gabe" for his poor hygiene habits. In The Lightning Thief, Percy sends the head of Medusa to his mother, who uses it to petrify Gabe and sell the resulting statue to a museum. Later in the series, his mother marries Paul Blofis, who Percy is first wary of, but then warms up to. When Sally and Paul finally marry, Percy is happy.
Percy's father is Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Initially, Percy resented his father, feeling as if he were abandoned, but Percy then learns that Poseidon wanted to stay with him and his mother, but was forbidden to by the other gods. Percy now has a strong feeling of admiration and pride for his father, and he works for approval. Poseidon once called his son a hero greater than Heracles and said that Percy was his favorite son. One of Percy's most important memories is of Poseidon visiting his cradle with a warm glow and smile. Percy also has a half-brother named Tyson, a cyclops, as a result of his father. At first, Percy was ashamed to have a monster as a brother, but he later grew fond of the cyclops after the adventures they had together. It was revealed later that Tyson prayed for a friend to his father, and so Poseidon sent him Percy. He is also related to Frank Zhang, as Frank's maternal ancestors link him to Poseidon.
Other acquaintances
Chiron is a centaur and son of Kronos. He was in charge of Camp Half-Blood for most of the series, with the exception being The Sea of Monsters, when he was temporarily fired, blamed for poisoning Thalia's tree. When Percy went to Yancy Academy, Chiron posed as a crippled Latin teacher named Mr. Brunner. Mr. Brunner became Percy's favorite teacher. It was Chiron who gave Percy Anaklusmos, and the centaur tried to clear Percy's name in The Lightning Thief when he was blamed for stealing Zeus's lightning bolt. When Percy went missing in The Lost Hero, Chiron became pained, having raised Percy into a hero.
Luke Castellan, the son of Hermes, was Percy's rival in Percy Jackson & the Olympians. In The Lightning Thief, Percy thought of Luke as a friend and mentor figure, but by the end of the book Luke revealed that he was the true lightning thief and sent a scorpion to kill Percy. In The Sea of Monsters, Percy tricks Luke into revealing that he was behind the poisoning of Thalia's tree, proving Chiron's innocence. In The Titan's Curse, Luke is knocked over a cliff, but Annabeth tells Percy that he is still alive. In The Battle of the Labyrinth, Percy witnesses Luke's body becoming a vessel for Kronos, and Luke has Percy fight a giant. In The Last Olympian, it is revealed that Luke feared Percy for his power, and Luke kills himself, destroying the vessel for Kronos, after hurting Annabeth. Percy had expressed jealousy for Annabeth's affection towards Luke, although she saw Luke as more of a brother.
Octavian is a relative of Apollo, although not a first-generation demigod, who reads the auguries at Camp Jupiter. He becomes Percy's rival in The Heroes of Olympus. When Percy first comes to camp in The Son of Neptune, Octavian believes that he is a spy for Gaea. At the end of the book, when Percy becomes a praetor, Octavian thinks that his chances of becoming one were stolen and accuses Percy of leading the Greeks to Camp Jupiter for an attack. In addition, Octavian blackmails Hazel Levesque, leading Percy to be on guard in case he needs to kill.
