Christian Slater (born Christian Michael Leonard Hawkins on August 18, 1969 in New York City) is an American actor.

Background

His mother is Hollywood casting director Mary Jo Slater, who gave her Star Trek-obsessed son a cameo role in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). His father is the English actor Michael Hawkins.

Educated at the Dalton School, New York; the Professional Children's School, New York; and the School of Performing Arts, New York.

After a start in 1976 in his TV debut on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, he undertook stage work including a 1980 stage debut opposite Dick Van Dyke in touring revival of "The Music Man". He made his big screen debut in 1985 in the film "The Legend of Billie Jean" [1]. He has since gone on to acclaim in both film and stage roles.

He has a well tabloid publicised record of alcohol and drug abuse, and a series of high profile female relationships. In 2000, he persuaded long term girlfriend Ryan Haddon (daughter of Dayle Haddon) that his past was behind him, and they married - the couple have two children, but are presently separated and in negotiations over their divorce - partly due to Haddon's assult on Slater, partly due to Haddon's dislike of London, mostly due to Slater's return to his previous partying lifestyle and lap dance clubs.

In 2004 he decided to return to the stage, and played in Randle P McMurphy in the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest at the Edinburgh Fringe. He twice contracted chicken pox, delaying the show's opening (see [1]). While continuing to appear in this play in London's West End, Slater was asked to play the role of John Watson aka Wonko the Sane for the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish, produced by Above the Title Productions.

In 2005 and 2006 he returned to the stage, this time in London, to play RP McMurphy (played on film by Jack Nicholson) in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

  • On December 29, 1989, Slater crashed into a telephone pole in West Hollywood, California and then led police on a car chase and kicked an officer.
  • On December 23, 1994, Slater was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport for bringing a gun on to an airplane.
  • In 1995, his ex-fiance, Nina Huang, sued him for palimony. The two reportedly settled out of court with Slater paying Huang $100,000.
  • On August 11, 1997, Slater was arrested by police in Los Angeles and charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of battery. Slater, drunk and high on heroin, punched his then-girlfriend, fashion editor Michelle Jonas, in the face at a party and biting a man who attempted to protect her. Slater did not go quietly, but hid in a stairwell and fought with officers, reportedly shouting, "the Germans are coming and they will kill us!" He than attacked a police officer. All the felony charges against him were eventually dropped. He was sentenced to three months in prison, serving 59 days for good behavior [2]
  • In 2003, his wife, Ryan Haddon, was arrested for beating up Slater at a Hard Rock Cafe while on a trip to Las Vegas and he later received stitches. Slater has filed for divorce from Haddon for spousal abuse [3]
  • On May 31, 2005, Slater was arrested around 1:50 a.m. in Manhattan's Upper East Side, near 93rd Street and Third Avenue, after a woman told police that a man had grabbed her buttocks. She identified Slater as the man. Slater was arrested and charged with third-degree sexual abuse. The following July 14, prosecutors offered Slater a plea bargain but he refused it insisting the charges were false. On September 19, Slater agreed to an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal, whereby the case is adjourned for six months, and if during that time, he remains out of trouble, the charges are dismissed.

Personal life

Has a complex and well tabloid reported personal life. He has a history of alcohol and drug abuse, including cocaine. His partners include:

  • Nina Huang - model. Dated and then cohabited 1990-95. Engagement called off. Huang, sued him for palimony. The two reportedly settled out of court with Slater paying Huang $100,000.

  • Christy Turlington - model, dated in 1993
  • Christina Applegate - dated in 1996
  • Michelle Jonas - reporter and fashion editor, dated 1996-97
  • Ryan Haddon - reporter. Dated 1998-2000, married 12 February 2000. Two children: Jaden Zach Haddon-Slater (b. 6 April 1999), and Eliana Sophia (b. 15 August 2001)
  • Abbey Russo - London prostitute. Slept with her in June 2004, according to the News of the World

Panasonic Work

Slater is the voice of Panasonic on radio and television ads. His rendition of "Panasonic Ideas for Life" is highly recognizable.
