Shi De Yang (释德杨), born Shi Wanfeng (史万峰; Taikang, 1968) is a Chinese Buddhist priest, and the 31st Grand Master of the fighting monks (wǔsēng 武僧) of the Shaolin Monastery.[1][2] Shi De Yang is globally considered one of the greatest present exponents of traditional Shaolin culture.
Disciple of Venerable Shi Suxi (d. 2006) for almost 30 years. Shi De Yang is one of few Shaolin Masters of recent generations to have studied in a profound manner all "three treasures of Shaolin" (Chan, Wu (martial arts), Yi (traditional medicine)). This traditional knowledge, aptitude to studying and teaching, exceptional martial abilities and pshilosophical vision, have allowed him to have some of the more prominent roles in the Shaolin Temple, such as headmaster of the warrior monks.
Books and documentaries have been made about him, however despite the international fame Shi De Yang continues to reside in the Shaolin Temple, absorbed in his studies and teaching. To the activities at the Temple Shi De Yang has for some years added the management of his external school, Shaolin Wuseng Houbeidui[3], which welcomes about one hundred young students, often very poor, to whom he offers a study program composed of Shaolin and general culture.Master Shi De Yang also supervises the European branch of his school and collaborates with numerous other Shaolin schools around the world.
Biography
Shi De Yang was born in Taikang, in Henan China. His infancy was common except for having an ex shaolin monk as his neighboor, this elder was always telling about his life at the Shaolin temple and this was what introduced Shi De Yang to the shaolin kung fu. Despite the negative of his De Yang's family he got admitted at the Shaolin Temple. The training was sometimes so hard, he thought several times of leaving the Shaolin, but because of his Master Shi Su Xi he decided to stay.
After several years of study and practice he managed to perfect his techniques of Ying Qi Gong (hard chi kung), Da Hong Quan, Xiao Hong Quan, Luo Han Quan, Shaolin Gun, Shaolin Jian and other shaolin boxing styles.
Present
In August 1991 he begins to exert as Chief of Warrior Shaolin Monks, every day apart from training his disciples he find time to teach foreign that visited his school to learn the authentic Shaolin.
In the last years Shi De Yang with the commitment of transmitting the shaoling kung fu to the world several schools from around the world have associated to the Shaolin Temple and to Shi De Yang's purpose.
When asking Shi De Yang about his labour in the kung fu's legacy and its philosophy the master says:
"Because I want people to benefit with shaolin kung fu and in the other hand because many westerns don't know really what shaolin kung fu and its philosophy is"
He also says:
"The real kung fu is not pretty but is very practical, I once visited America and realized americans do not like exhibition kung fu because they say it is like dance, they are really interested in learning traditional kung fu and that's what I want to teach"
